What state do you live it ?? Are you currently being treated for your mental

illness ? I live in Texas, Tarrant County and we have MHMR. Mental Health Mental

Retardation. It is a free program and can refer you to many places.

Thanks to all who responded to my question. I will take it all into

consideration.

I am Catholic so I think I will check with Catholic Charities first to

see if they have someone who can help me navigate the system. I know

that I qualify for SSI. I was in the middle of a divorce when I

applied and the only reason I was turned down was that there was a

house with my name on the deed. The house has since sold and I got no

money from it.

It's really hard sometimes. I was very athletic and mentally on the

ball. I got married, started having kids, then I started getting sick

mentally and physically. My husband totally rejected me and became

abusive. He was a gun freak and even threatened to shoot me. He

thought I was totally making it all up to get out of doing housework.

Yes, you read that right. So, I had to leave in order to keep from

getting killed. We have four kids together.

I am unable to work other than self-employment because flare-ups and

mental episodes mean I am incapacitated on an irregular schedule. I

have custody of the kids. The hardest part, I guess, is in explaining

the exact situation in such a way that people can know I am a good mom

even though I am truly disabled. I can take care of my kids with my

family's help. My family (Mom and brothers) help out in any way that

they can, so we get by okay, but I often feel I'm walking a tightrope.

When you get a chronic illness, you find out who your friends are.
