Guest guest
I keep finding more and more... The more I look, the more I find pointing to DIET. I looked up this website that was talking about, and they spoke of something called a Prosorba column - it's a special filter for the blood used to block antigens responsible for the autoimmune joint deterioration in severe RA.(Note: due to lack of funding by the original company, it is no longer available, but it is still a viable road of exploration.) So then I typed in " using food to block antigens " and found out that it is " lectins " that come from certain foods, ie: wheat, legumes including peanuts, dairy, plants of the nightshade family and others, that affect the blood cell antigens. Another website said that lectins can amplify the affects of autoimmune diseases. Then a medical research paper called " Modulation of immune function by dietary lectins in rheumatoid arthritis " had this as their conclusion: " We have provided extensive evidence linking dietary sub- stances to the development of RA. Dietary glycoproteins, as well as other elements, can influence intestinal structure and function so as to allow increased translocation of both pathogenic and dietary antigens to the periphery causing persistent immunological stimulation. Because of shared amino acid motifs among exogenous peptides, HLA-derived peptides and self tissue, cross reactivity may occur thereby breaking immunological tolerance and resulting in the expression of RA. It is proposed that by eliminating certain dietary elements, including lectins, which adversely influ- ence both enterocyte and lymphocyte structure and function, the peripheral antigenic stimulus will be reduced and thereby result in a diminution of disease symptoms in some but not all patients with RA. " In other words, changing the diet can reduce symptoms of RA. This is what many of the medical papers that I've been reading are saying. Now I know it says it can help " some but not all patients with RA " , I'm willing to give it a shot and see if it helps me. I know it won't cure the RA, but maybe it will lessen the severity of it so that I don't have to take the strong meds as much. Another note: Diet has been linked to many other diseases such as fibro and many, many others. Changing our diets may help us out in more ways than one. It doesn't mean we have to give up certain foods forever, it just means that we may have options as to whether we want to eat something and deal with the inflammation or not. Another thing I read is that if you give up the food for a while, chances are good that later on in the future you will be able to tolerate it better, once the immune system has quieted down. Very interesting stuff - at least to me it is!!! (Note: where they speak of influencing the intestinal structure and function blah, blah, blah - that is the " leaky gut syndrome " that I mentioned in my previous post that can possibly cause the RA in the first place and exasperate it later.) PS: Thanks for the website, very interesting! [ ] Drs always saying arthritis.. Hi group, Think that (was it Sue's ?) doc's explanation of which joints rheumatoid can affect was rather an over-simplification and not quite accurate. It certainly can affect the hip though rarely. I just googled <synovial fluid and lumbar spine> and came up with a web site <arthritis-treatment-and-relief.co> that seems to explain the anatomy and types of arthritis quite neatly. Of course I am NOT endorsing the commercial part of the site in any way,but the general info seems sound.(The creators of the site have arthritis in the family) There is a lot of info on the site, but unfortunately it seems cumbersome/ well nigh impossible to find one's way into the search part when you are actually IN the site. (Probably my tired brain! Oh dear) Still I have just tried a 'test query' of my own, using google ,to search 'rituximab arthritis treatment and relief' and it came up with the goods quckly, the approriate informative entry in this site. So it might help with other queries, hopefully. Worth a try. Guest guest
hi linda i make muffins using ripe bananas almond flour coconut oil and gelatin. you can also use eggs. 2 c almond flour 4-8 T coc oil / butter 1 packet gelatin mixed in 1/2 c hot water 2 ripe bananas mushed up Mix together and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 mins. or 2 c almond flour 3 eggs 4-8 T coc oil / butter you can't use beans as legumes contain lectins as do grains. i also sometimes make raw crackers in my dehydrator using ground flax and almonds with celery onion parsley gralic and slat. mix in food processor and dehydrate 18-24 h - til crispy. i don't use dairy except butter. lmk how you go with it. monique , I always thought that the Paleo Diet was like the Raw Food Diet but with raw meat. I'm learning something new every day. If the Paleo diet eliminates grains, do you still eat bread-like foods at all? I've been reading where you can make flour out of ground up beans. Do you do anything like that? Do you use dairy? Cow's milk? The second link you listed I have read before. It is VERY interesting. My story is much like the 43 year-old woman as far as symptoms go. I also like the part that says, " By this time you might be asking yourself why your rheumatologist doesn't know this stuff. A better question is why don't you know this stuff? You're the one that has arthritis. " Chapter 2 kinda tells you why our doctors don't treat us the way we wish they would. I believe it. Recently my brother watched an old movie " Sister Kenny " with lind . It was about an Australian bush-nurse that was the first to develop and use " hot packs " (rags of wool dipped in boiling water and then completely wrung out until dry) to treat the muscle spasms of polio victims instead of the recommended splints and casts which left them paralyzed. At first, the medical community was totally against her until they realized that her treatments were working. They actually called her " an ignorant quack " . It's interesting that actor Alan Alda of M.A.S.H. had polio and was a patient of her treatment. I'd be appreciative of any other info you'd be willing to share about your use of the Paleo diet. Guest guest
, This is wonderful! Where can I get more recipes like this? I was looking all over the internet yesterday and didn't come up with much. Most recipes eliminate one problematic food group, but not all of them the way yours do. Again, where can I find more recipes like this? I greatly appreciate your help, [ ] Re: More about Diet (was...Drs always saying arthritis...) hi linda i make muffins using ripe bananas almond flour coconut oil and gelatin. you can also use eggs.
