Subject: RD to patient ratio

I know that this has been talked about before but would like to refresh my

memory. For those of you in acute care hospitals, what is the standard RD to

patient ratio? Thanks!

I don't believe there is any " standard " . A lot depends on average LOS &

the acuity of patient care (i.e. a single dietitian might be adequate to cover

a facility that is very short stay, not many issues with MNT). The only standard

would be following your Protocol & Procedures with some consistency: 1) there

is a screening mechanism in place that occurs within 24 hrs of admission

(typically part of the nursing admit screen); 2) triggers for a full nutrition

assessment appropriate to your patient population; 3)  realistic & appropriate

reassessment protocol to monitor & adjust MNT interventions; and 4) this has to

be consistent 7 days a week.

I work in a community hospital in Queens, New York. Depending on coverage, it

may range from 50-90 patients per RD. I have also worked at another community

hospital (in Harlem, New York this time) which had a ration of ~40-50

patients/RD. Hope this helps!
