Guest guest
Sorry to break the bad news to whoever blasted you Jan, but, I still work in SNF almost every day, and have managed huge companies' nutrition services for the last 3 decades at the national level. Hand sanitizers are not allowed to be used for sanitizing purposes in the kitchens. Period. As a topping after handwashing that's one thing, but mainly it's a feel-good thing. At the kitchen door so that stray visitors crossing the red-line use it, that's also another thing. But even during complete kitchen renos the alternate meal prep/service sites must have portable running hot/cold water sources for soap and water handwashing to be performed as required. I don't' have time to look for the resources and food codes - that's why I memorized most of them and use as rough guidelines now. Those that challenge this can send their sources bc they're going to be needed during a DHS inspection whether state or federal. The use of hand sanitizers IS allowed in nursing practice and very common. They are allowed to use specific sanitizer gels (has to do w the specific ppm) a max of 3X bw residents, then regular handwashing is required before the next 3 are touched. This applies even w gloves which have to be changed bw each resident. Again, I'm not looking this up, I see it daily in my practice (or rather every other day). I've barely stepped foot (except as a visitor on a rare occasion) in a hospital or nursing home in 10 years. But, I thought I recalled a discussion on this listserv in the past that I mentioned that hand sanitizers WERE NOT EFFECTIVE to control disease spread and I was blasted for my comments by a number of RDs, saying they were effective. I DO see that in 2007 this was discussed here. Jan Patenaude, RD, CLT Director of Medical Nutrition Signet Diagnostic Corp.
