Guest guest
I have done a portion distortion board that had people guess the difference between todays food versus what it was 20 years ago. It shocked a lot of people. Another project I have done in the past was have a box of cereal and some bowls and have people pour their normal serving size, then compare it to the actual serving size to show how much over they are eating. Guest guest
Those are both excellent ideas. I recently had a very large health fair to attend with 3,000 employees and wanted to make sure I had a visual display that 1) would get people talking 2) be educational 3) be relatively self explanatory if I couldn't talk at the moment - e.g. if I was talking to someone else. And of course 4) not cost me a lot of money  The cost to me was some groceries including lots of sugar packets. I made a video of it on my YouTube channel - the lighting and sound are not the best but you can get the idea. http://youtu.be/rTKsI71wG_A I attached packets of sugar to various products indicating how much added sugar was in them....20oz coke (16pkts), Vitamin water (8), large fast food soda (22pkts), Snapple, Red Bull, etc. and Pop Tarts, snickers (but someone took my prop!), salad dressing, some cereals. I even had some " healthier " items like a Fiber One muffin (5pkts), and an organic cereal bar. I tried to use more obvious things were it was added sugar vs natural sugar found in juice and dairy products like yogurt.  I had a sign up sheet for employees to sign up for my e-letter and will send out my next one to this group specifically with a link to the video -just in case they had forgotten!  I did make an investment in something that I'm glad I did. I wanted something more than business cards to give out (I had some handouts as well) with my info on it. Was thinking of making a tri-fold brochure on my services or a postcard which I've seen a lot of RDs do. Someone though suggested to me a bookmark...much more useful. So I had those made using my business card as a part of it (so I wouldn't have to recreate everything). Office Depot did it and I'm very happy with their service. MUCH more so than Fed Ed Kinko's....after 2days they still couldn't get it right. Office Depot had it done within hours.  Neily, MS, RD, CSSD, LD Registered and Licensed Dietitian Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics Nutrition Consultant to Meals to Live, LLC www.mealstolive.com  Website: www.jenniferneily.com Twitter: www.twitter.com/Neily Facebook: www.facebook.com/NeilyonNutrition ________________________________ To: " 'rd-usa ' " <rd-usa > Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2012 2:08 PM Subject: RE: Health Fair Ideas  I have done a portion distortion board that had people guess the difference between todays food versus what it was 20 years ago. Guest guest
I've set up a nutrition table at our local Y for various health fairs and have had success with the following:  * handouts (100 snacks for under 100 calories, etc) * quizzes (how well do you know your a) fats, heart, etc) * guess how many beans in the jar (or other healthy food) * handouts if feasible - dollar store or target $ section items with nutrition theme like small cutting boards, calculators, pencils, etc * healthy finger food samples, especially unusual foods that people typically haven't tried - people love free food!  Hope this helps, Ruth  ________________________________ To: " rd-usa " <rd-usa > Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 1:45 AM Subject: Re: Health Fair Ideas  Those are both excellent ideas.
