Guest guest
OM, did she test you for painful pressure points? Its my understanding that you at least to have pain in some of the pressure points to have a diagnose of fibromyalgia. When this all first started with me, I had severe pain in legs and arms, not joints; no swelling, only excrutiating pain. Went to one doc who said I had fibro (I really believe he was on some types of drugs himself) I asked him why when everywhere he pressed felt good and he had no answer. Next doc said PMR, polymyalgia rheumatica, but then later when I tried to reduce pred, the pain in my knees wrists and fingers started with swelling and he says I have secondary RA also. So its really confusing when you have multiple symptoms. But I was just curious about the pressure points. a [ ] has anyone been misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia?? I went for my first ever visit with a rheumatologist, and she (after spending five minutes with me taking a VERY BRIEF history, and testing range of motion of my joints) said I have fibromyalgia and not arthritis. Her reasoning is that I do not have the joint destruction commonly seen with arthritis. I have to say that I am 29 and the onset of my symptoms is fairly recent. Maybe I have fibromyalgia, maybe I don't. But I am having joint pain, not muscle pain. Its not like I WANT to have arthritis. LOL. I would love to hear that its not that serious, if that were true. Fibromyalgia sounds so much more treatable than say... RA, PA, or Lupus. No offense to people with fibromyalgia. I'm just saying that, I have seen what RA can do to a person... My mom has seronegative RA and has experienced severe destruction in her joints. So, I know what happens when a diagnosis is delayed.... I am having pain: wrists shoulders hips ankles toes fingers spine (neck & back) Sometimes my joints " freeze " in place and it is really hard to move them. Can fibromyalgia cause your joints to freeze?? She ordered labs, to be sure, but I am not convinced that I can trust this rheumy. I have never heard of fibromyalgia causing severe pain in joints. I am just curious to hear if this has happened to anyone else.
Guest guest
Of course, you can have both, I do, but RA is more joints, Fibro is more muscular. Oy, what is it with these doctors? They want you to arrive in a wheelchair before they will diagnose you?! Duh, it takes a while for joint destruction! Guest guest
sorry to hear you had such a rotten first visit with a rheumy. I am lucky I do have a great one, He is an expert on fibromyalgia and has written a book called the fibromyalgia cure. His name is Dr. Dryland. Maybe look up his website and you can learn more about fibro. I agree that you need to see someone else. I have both RA and fibro and sometimes everything hurts so bad , it hard to tell which it is.............you can have joint pain without RA and I do hope that is the case for you,, but I would certainly get a second opinion on this Good luck Pat in Southern Oregon Bureau Alvarez [ ] Re: has anyone been misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia?? Guest guest
Nope, she did not test for pressure points. She did some kind of physical examination, to test for range of motion in my joints.... but IMHO it was not very thorough(sp). She asked me a bunch of questions, and came to the conclusion that I have fibromyalgia. She used my thyroid disorder as one basis for diagnosis. She did run tests for Lupus, RA, and Vit D deficiency.... but, she seemed REALLY convinced that I have fibromyalgia. FYI the onset of my joint pain is fairly recent. So I do not have any obvious joint damage. But I can see that some of my joints are starting to swell. I am not entirely convinced that it is fibromyalgia, because the pain is in my JOINTS. She says my limited range of motion in my right hand is probably caused osteoarthritis. At 29??? I am a bit confused and not convinced that she is right. Sometimes the pain is so severe I cannot move. I have severe stiffness in my neck and it " freezes " for hours at a time. The same with my hip, and ankles. I am not sure what is wrong but I have never heard of fibromyalgia doing this. > > OM, did she test you for painful pressure points? Guest guest
, you are so right. I started out trying to be docile and nice with the doctors and the nurses. But not anymore. If they don't show a reasonable amount of courtesy and professionalism, I let them have it. I would have never dealt with situations like that in the past, just finally got fed up with the lack of caring and empathy in the medical profession. Guest guest
Fibromyalgia is pretty distinct in being able to diagnose. There are qualifications that are used at the time of diagnois. The trigger and tender points are specific to FMS and if you had the required amount it is possible that it is FMS. FMS isn't just muscles that are affected, it causes nerve pain, joints, tendons and ligaments. However, although it may not do permanent damage it is just as dibilitating as rheumatoid arthritis and really isn't all that easy to treat. There is only one drug on the market for FMS which is Lyrica and many of us cannot take it, so we continue to suffer. The artritis foundation can send you a packet of information www.arthritis.org they send it to you for free. However, just because you have been diagnosed with FMS doesn't mean that you might not get arthritis later. I've had FMS since the age of 26 finally diagnosed at 29 almost 30. By 30, I was completely disabled and spent 2 years bedbound. The rheumatologist will more than likely keep looking for other things if you begin to show signs of arthritis. For RA, you usually develope swelling, redness, warmth and pain. The morning stiffness is different than from what is experienced with FMS. FMS can overlap other illnesses and mimic others too. Many thought they had lyme but was FMS and vice versa. Just because one gets FMS doesn't mean they won't get something else, but it also does not mean you will. I have a friend that has had it since she was 20 she is now 36 like me. I now have connective tissue/inflammatory arthritis but she just still has FMS. I have much older friends that have FMS but does not have any other illnesses either. Usually a good rheumatologist will do a bunch of lab work while diagnosing the FMS to rule out other things as well From: OM Shanti <nk_laurie@...> Subject: [ ] has anyone been misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia?? Guest guest
Sometimes, one just having only Fibromyalgia has to use a wheelchair or a cane to walk. Muscles atrophy and become so weak due to not being able to do much, plus having myofascia issues on top of the muscles makes it worse. It can affect the joints ligaments and nerves but does not cause damage like the RA can. From: <catdelouise@...> Subject: [ ] Re: has anyone been misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia?? Guest guest
I have had fibromyalgia for 16 years or more and still don't need a wheelchair of a cane. Still am very active and mobile so my msucles don't get atrophy. The yoga classes I take help my muscles stay limber. My rheum has always given me a script NSAID to help my multiple joint pain even though I don't have RA or much OA yet. ------------------------------------

Guest guest
Hi, I have RA, Lupus SLE, & Fibro. Sometimes, I don't know which one is hurting or if it is all of them. I know my Rhem. factor was 342, now they have it down to about 92. The doc said I don't have damage, but my wrists, knees, hands, fingers, hips and lower back is in alot of pain. They are always telling me I don't have inflamation, until I went in the office one day and my right hand was so swelled I couldn't make a fist. She told me she was giving me a kenalog shot and if this didn't work, then she would have to put me on another med. My next visit, she went back to India. Now I have to find another doc and start over. I am trying to get disability, have been fighting it for 3 years. Am due to go before a judge sometime this year, and my doc goes back to India without any notice. Thank God I have a wonderful family physican. Good Luck, my thoughts are with you. Try a new doc. Guest guest
Coetta and Group Coetta for the past year I was hoping my rheumy would go back to India. Yes she is from India, But since I been talking to our support group here, I have learn why she has done or not done the things I thought she should have. I have CHF, PAH, COPD, high blood pressure and diabetes. These are the most serious illnesses I have. I have all the othr stuff that goes with it. So I am relizing she has to conceder them too. I still believe one has to limp a little to get help. I am just sorry I waited till I had to walk like I was in pain, cause I really was lol. The illness I put in abbreviations are very serious illnes. Meaning I am taking other types of medications too. I am sorry your Rheumy took off like that.. One would think she/he would set up for her patients to go some where else with the records. On the news there was a dentist that did that, and one guy sued, by golly he got his records and what else was needed. haaaaaaaaaa. Guys I hope I get the names right. We have a very large group and I try very hard to keep everyones name right. If I dont please forgive me. gentle hugs Clora > > > Hi, I have RA, Lupus SLE, & Fibro.
