Guest guest
Hmm....interesting question. I had an IUD inserted over 15 yrs ago. I developed RA 6 yrs ago. I was also in a very tramatic car accident as a teenager. There is no one else in my family with auto-immune disease so who knows the trigger. I can tell you that my husband is a desert storm veteran. He brought back all kinds of strange symptoms. My strange symptoms started after his return from desert storm. Guest guest
I have hypo-thyroid also. I had the onset of it in 2000, when my mother died and I could not get out of bed. I was dxd with RA about 18mos ago. I believe that when you have an autoimmune disease you have a greater risk for others. I have nothing to back this, just the observation of this groups multiple illnesses. I never had an IUD though. My daughter did and had so many problems she had it removed. A couple of years ago she developed fibro. We truly believe her fibro surfaced because of a horrific accident to her foot and ankle. She has 2 plates and 10 pins in it. I would not be surprised to learn that the IUD played some role though. Guest guest
I have read that if you have one autoimmune disease, chances are you'll have another. I have RA and Sjogren's syndrome. No IUD. Guest guest
I have hashimoto's thyroiditis too, RA, and PCOS. The jury is out on why we get PCOS, but my endocrinologist said he wouldn't be surprised if the genes were interrelated. Oh, and no IUD, I was infertile and it took me 7 years to have 2 kids. Guest guest
Wow, Shirley - if those are all linked to RA in some way or another, sign me up - its no wonder! I have had hypothyroidism since I was in my 20's. I had an IUD a couple of different times and had troubles with them both. Not to mention the horrific experiences I have endured throughout my lifetime as well. Its no wonder women are diagnosed with RA more than men! Seems like all of the different types of stresses in our lives (whether physical, emotional or medical) wreaks havoc with our immune system. Which would stand to reason. Our immune system is designed to recognize some kind of foreign response in our bodies and attack it to make it go away. I imagine when something major happens or something major is ongoing (good, bad or otherwise), our immune systems go into overload - then it doesn't know how to shut back off when the stress to our system is over - or adjust itself if the stress to our system is ongoing. We need a " reset " button, I think. Maybe that is the answer to all of this..............Doreen > > I have hypo-thyroid also. Guest guest
I also have 2 auto imm. diseases, sarcoidosis (dx when I was 22), which they say is in remission and RA, which was dx in July. I am 58 now. The fatigue I feel with RA is the same way I felt when the sarcoid was active. I was told that sarcoids can affect your joints and muscles, and I truly believe it. I started having muscle and joint pain at age 25 and it never stopped, just got progressively worse. Over the years, I have been dx with tennis elbow, bursitis, oseto. arithtis, tendonitis, stretched ligaments, frozen shoulders, fibro. I have spent years in and out of physical theraphy. It took 35 years for me to finally get some relief. I am now on prednisone and mtx, as well as tramadol, vicodin and ibuprofen. I still have pain in my neck, shoulders, elbows, hands, knees, ankles and feet, but the pain levels are now around 4-6 instead of 9-10. I had been in intense pain since Dec. 2006. Thank God I was able to retire at 52, after working 30 years. I have much sympathy for all of you that work!
