Guest guest
Welcome Ginger, I'm sorry the mtx isn't working for you. Have you talked to your doctor, maybe changing your dose, or trying a biologic med with it? That seems like a high dose of Prednisone to me. I only use Prednisone when I'm in a flare, and it does help a lot. There are a lot of side effects taking Prednisone for a long period of time. I know you have to wean off it, when you go off it. When I use it for a flare, I take lik 10mg, every other day. You really need to talk with your doctor about this, good luck Tawny --- In , " gingercherie1 " <gingercherie1@...> wrote: > > I am a 31 year old female, I have been diagnosed with having RA, and > fibromyalgia, I have been on methotrexate for the last year and it > just is not work, I recently had to go the emergency room because of > inflammation in my eye and the eye doctor put me on 140mg of > Prednisone!!! Guest guest
Sweetie, I am so sorry that have this disease at such a young age. We do have a young group here with RA and I am sure that they will respond to you. Just this week our moderator posted an article about pregnancy and RA. In the study the women experienced remission during pregnancy. If I was younger, I would be tempted. Well sort of, I'm divorced, and I only know of one immaculate conception. I wouldn't meet the criteria either. I am sure that you can not stay on that dosage of prednisone. It is very high. I take 5mg good times and 10mg bad times. That is as much as I am comfortable with. I know that it can cause osteoporosis and it does effect your adrenal glands. Here is a site that you might want to check out. http://arthritis.about.com/od/prednisone/f/risks_benefits.htm I hope your eye improves soon. Guest guest
Hello! I'm also a 31 year old female, so I know what your going through. If the Methotrexate isn't working, you should talk to your doctor about trying one of the Biologics (Enbrel, Humira, etc). I needed Humira added to the Methotrexate in order to get some real pain relief. As for the prednisone, that's a high dose and your doctor isn't going to let you keep it that high. Also, prednisone isn't going to put your RA into remission, just treat the symptoms. I was initially put on a Medrol Dosepak (another type of steroid) and boy did I feel great once that kicked in! But once it wore off, all of my symptoms returned. As a young women, you don't want to be on prednisone because it causes osteoporosis. My doctor always stressed that I needed to take calcium supplements while on the prednisone. Once I added the Humira, I was able to get off of the prednisone and I want to stay off. I don't think you can take prednisone while pregnant either. As for the methotrexate, my rheumatologist told me I'd need to stop it for at least three months before attempting to conceive. I already have two children, so I've decided to not have any more because I can't come off of these medications and still be able to care for the children I already have. Guest guest
Hi Ginger,I'm around your age (36) and just got off my 2nd dose of prednisone. I reacted kinda weird to the prednisone.. got quite agressive (grr) and it made me freekishly tired and spacy to where my boss noticed and told me to call my doctor. The doctor said usually it makes folks hyper. But I definately felt no pain ;o) I was typing at work and realized I had forgotten what it felt like to not have pain with *every* key stroke. Unfortunately I had to get stitches during my time on the steriods and they interfere with healing. I had to have the stiches in 2x as long as normal and the cut still wasn't healed but they had to take them out because my body was rejecting the stitches.. so now I have an ugly scar... I hope you get off them soon and they find a good med for you that works. -Margaret On Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 5:57 PM, gingercherie1 <gingercherie1@...>wrote: > I am a 31 year old female, I have been diagnosed with having RA, and > fibromyalgia, I have been on methotrexate for the last year and it > just is not work, I recently had to go the emergency room because of > inflammation in my eye and the eye doctor put me on 140mg of > Prednisone!!! Guest guest
Hello Cherie, Sorry to hear about your sufferings and need to be here but am sure you will find this group caring and supportive, a 'family' of all ages and experience. Just ask or vent as things come to mind. You will get replies and different slants on things and humour and common sense. I read and post here supporting a  friend with RA and no computer , and as a retired doc in UK just wanted to add a little more about your prednisone query, and your eyes. Yes, as others have said this is a high dose, as seen for RA, but the opthalmologist prescribed it to presumably rapidly control pressure and inflammation in your eye which might have been dangerous otherwise. You don't say exactly what that problem was,and which part of the eye but I think it would be important to have a clear name for what was going on in the eye. It could itself be an autoimmune proccess and could have a bearing in the management of your RA with other medication. Do get precise details if you don't already have them. As others often say here information is powerful. You need it to access what is best for you as you live your life with this , and become your best advocate. Good luck, UK From: gingercherie1 <gingercherie1@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Young female: Having a hard time Date: Saturday, 13 September, 2008, 1:46 AM Thank you, thank you, Thank you all for all of the messages and information already, I often feel like no one understands the pain or the depression, I think that my family sometimes belived I was being a drama queen or overreacting. Guest guest
Ginger, Prednisone is a wonder drug. They give it for everything from RA inflamation to really bad cases of poison ivy and everything in between. It is not a good thing to stay on long term, it weakens one. However, I have been on 5mg of prednisone for a loooong time in conjunction with my other meds. Every time we would try to take it away, my body would flare. Just couldn't upset that cocktail! The relief you get is so helpful, but temporary. I'm in a flare right now that an IV of pred didn't do much for last wk. It's the first time that a big burst didn't help me. Beth in MD Enjoy it while it lasts!!

Guest guest
so sorry to hear about your situation. I am 28 years old and have rheumatoid arthritis. I was diagnosed at the age of 16. I was put on methetrexate at a young age for my RA due to lack of insurance. It didn't work! At all! I finally was able to take celebrex which was my first real sign of relief in 2001/2002. My new rheumy took me off due to gastro instetional issues and I was then put on Enbrel (did have insurance) and wow, i have a new life! seriously. I was able to come off the prednisone after 10 years which they say can lead to some cardiovascular issues later in life. My hubby and contemplated on trying to conceive while on Enbrel so with the help of people on this board and talking with others who have RA and have taken Enbrel, we took the jump - conceived within 2 weeks and now I'm 11 weeks along --- and everything looks wonderful!! Though not in remission, the RA is the same as it was before. Very little stiffness and I do take tylenol if i need it. I wish you the best of luck and will keep you in my prayers about this --- remember, you have RA and Fibro, THEY DO NOT HAVE U! Guest guest
Thanks for responding everyone, I kinda figured that it wouldn't last long. The opthamalogist told me that I had epi-sclerits, which was caused by the auto-immune systemic disease and the fact that the MXT wasn't working properly.  Does prednisone cause muscle cramps, I have noticed that my hands and feet get cramped more often than usual. I am definetely going to try something like Humira, sounds like its working wonders for others.  Thanks Ginger in MD
Guest guest
Krissy and group; Congrats krissy. Children are so rewarding and yet so exhausting. I just had my second grandson he is about 4 weeks old now. I think having kids is great but having grandkids is the best lol. I can't imagine taking care of a kid with RA. I wasnt diagnosed till my kids was raised. I see a lot of people here have kids at home and they have RA. Not one complaint. Having grandkids is like someone having the kids for you haaaaaaaaaaa. Good luck sweetheart. Yes we have RA and RA don't have us. gentle kind hugs Clora >
Guest guest
Ginger - I second Lori's response. I'm nearly 33, diagnosed with RA at 31. I refuse steroids, mostly because of the long term effects (and truthfully, because of the short term too) but also because we so many other options available to us, as well. I started on MTX, but didn't get good results until my doctor and I decided together to add in Remicade. Talking to your Rheumatologist about all your options is the best thing you can do for yourself. I can tell you that while it didn't seem that MTX didn't do much for me alone, now that I combine it with Remicade if I miss an MTX dose I feel miserable. We really do have options other than steroids! Best of luck. And stick with this group. Yes, there are a bunch of us " youngins " here, but the wiser people have so much to teach us too. Great group to seek support from! > > Hello! I'm also a 31 year old female, so I know what your going through. Due to my age, my rheumy doesn't want me to go on Mtx. I have been denied twice and submitted my written appeal today. I hope it helps! I am a paralegal with a great law firm and I have the backing of my firm for help if I need it! The insurance company wants me to try Mtx first before they will cover a percentage of the cost. I know many of you have been going through these insurance hoops for years - I am just learning the process. Before being diagnosed, I have not had any medical problems. I find it appalling that the insurance companies can dictate what they will cover, even if your doctor is not in favor of their recommendation. Everything is based on $$$!!!!! I have been taking 10mg of Prednisone of the last two weeks and I am doing ok. I still have some stiffness but it is better than I was before. The insurance company does not know who they are dealing with! I will do everything I can to feel 100% again. Everyone says Enbrel changed their life, I want my life back!! I have only been battling this disease for 2 months but I want my life back! Take care everyone and I hope to report good news with my insurance company soon!! > > > >
Guest guest
Yeah, , I'm so happy for you!!!! They have the Enbrel Pen, if you don't like the shot. It's much easier, call your pharmacy, if its not too late.
