We use a gel thickener at our facility that you mix into the drinks by shaking

and it works with all drinks. If you want I can find out the name of it for you

all.

According to our Abbott info, Ensure Plus isn't nectar-thick. Until

recently, we were adding thickener, but our speech pathologists have told us

that the thickener doesn't fully dissolve in Ensure, which is a

dysphagia/aspiration risk all its own. Since then, residents who require

thickened liquids have been taken off Ensure.....and given mighty shakes

w/thickener added (I guess the thick it dissolves uniformly in regular

milkshakes).

You might also want to try some of the recipes in Flavorful Fortified Food -

Recipes to Enrich Life available on Amazon.com. The book was co-authored by

me with S.Eck Mills, MBA, RD, FADA, after many years of developing and

testing our own recipes to use instead of commercial supplements for some of

the same problems you are stating as well as to avoid the expense and flavor

fatigue. Among the 30 beverage recipes you will find many that are not ice

cream based, therefore dysphagia safe, yet are thick and very high in

calories and protein. In addition to beverages and desserts there are breads

& cereals, soups, sauces and entrees. I do not eat any sweets and as a

matter of fact they repulse me, and my own father was very much the same.

That was one of several driving reasons for me to develop other methods to

provide enhanced calories and protein in smaller volumes. You can sample

email me directly and I'll email a sampler. Our original recipes were

tested and used throughout many years, however, for this book the 60 we used

were tested again to ensure that when prepared in quantities of 1 or 10 the
