Guest guest
Dear Colleagues, Please excuse the cross-post, I am in need of help for the child of relatives. 2-year-old male (b. 5/28/10). Dx GERD at 2 weeks (do not know what treatment was given). Normal growth and development otherwise. At one year, was given MMR vaccine, within 3 days developed temperature of 104 F. This has recurred every 3 weeks since then. He has been on antibiotics since 1 year. One month ago parents noted abnormal behavioral development; Dr. diagnosed autism. Upon a second examination, she repeated " definitely autism. " Parents took child to another physician (former pediatrician, turned focus to immunology). This dr. stated " Definitely not autism. " Ordered elimination of gluten, casein, dairy, and soy. Tests show he is allergic to dogs, cats, peanuts. But as far as I can make out, there is no suggestion of celiac disease. Mother now offers only organic foods, and juices fruits and vegetables for him. Child will not eat many of the foods available, but will eat eggs which she scrambles in coconut oil; Smart Portion veggie straws. Was told by dr. not to use Bare Naked Smoothies or Green Machine with barley/wheat grass, due to possible presence of gluten. Since starting diet, child has improved -- speaks new words daily, talks to younger brother, interacts with parents. However, he has diarrhea; and after 3 weeks developed a rash on trunk. Since 2 weeks he has had occasional BMs that smell like vomit and contain clear, jelly-like mucus. Parents are hopeful because of positive behavior changes; but concerned re rash, diarrhea, and nature of BMs. Want to know best possible diet for him within his restrictions and have been reading " Primal Blueprint " (apparently a return to eating pattern of early humans, similar to paleo diet). I suggested a test for vitamin D deficiency, also testing for small intestinal bowel overgrowth. Also suggested a pre-probiotic d/to repeated antibiotic use, but she asked if there is one that is gluten-free, which I don't know. This young couple is very proactive and willing to do whatever it takes for their son. However, I have no experience with pediatric diet, nor pediatric allergies. Can anyone offer advice, resources, or suggestions? Is LEAP useful in autism? MCTs, if so what brand? I appreciate any help, and thank you in advance. -ne
