Guest guest
The malnutrition screening tool (MST) is simple, quick, and has been validated for use in both in patient and outpatient settings. It's one of the tools that was recommended in the Academy's systematic review of nutrition screening tools. Regards, pam Pam Charney, PhD, RD Author, Consultant pcharney@... Guest guest
The Subjective Global Assessment was designed for use with Oncology patients and it has been validated. I know I was one of the RD's who helped validate it. Anytime sonmeone asks if you are intrested in something at a meeting find out what they want before you say yes. :-)  Jackie Chase RD Dillingham AK To: rd-usa Sent: Wednesday, August 1, 2012 1:48 PM Subject: Oncology  I am wondering if anyone has a screening tool or packet that they use with their oncology clinic to find patients at nutritional risk. Guest guest
While Otis an assessment tool most of the simple screening tools will refer 100% of oncology. The SGA will screen and give you risk so you can concentrate on the ones who need you the most. It is well worth giving it at look. Guest guest
Jackie, I'm not aware of anything that says that some screening tools refer 100% of oncology patients. Is that your opinion or have you seen published research with those results? In fact, one of the earlier studies done with the MST was in an outpatient radiation oncology clinic. It seems to me to be creating more work than necessary to conduct an SGA on every patient. When correctly done, the SGA requires that the RD obtain the patient's complete history and physical exam. That's not the intent of a screening tool. A few years back I wrote a paper for Nutrition in Clinical Practice that described the differences between nutrition screening and nutrition assessment. Guest guest
Pam, Can you provide a link or the questions included in the MST? Guest guest
I would not be conducting the screening. I need a tool that nursing staff can do quickly to identify higher risk patients and get them referred so that I'm not seeing them months down the road as an inpatient with a BMI in the 15's or lower. Thank you for the responses though Oncology > >> > >> > >> I am wondering if anyone has a screening tool or packet that they use with their oncology clinic to find patients at nutritional risk. Guest guest
The MST is specifically designed so that it can be (and should be) completed by nursing. It consists of two questions. It is elegant in its simplicity. Regards, pam Pam Charney, PhD, RD Author, Consultant pcharney@...
