Guest guest
If you haven't sent a letter to your senators and representatives of Congress, do so to protect our access to dietary supplements. The FDA is rattling their sword again to reduce our access to supplements and make it prohibitively expensive for any supplement company to be innovative. Argh!!! Information re the FDA assault on dietary supplements Dear D.S.D. International, Ltd. Customer Attached you will find a letter from Denis DeLuca, President, Biotics Research Corporation outlining what actions the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is attempting to do to control dietary supplement ingredients. Also, attached are sample letters for you and your patients/clients to send to your/their U.S. Senator(s) and U.S. Representative(s) and other Senators/Representatives as you/they choose. The address for the U.S Government web site is also enclosed for your use. Many threats to the food supplement industry have come and gone over the past 30 years (real or perceived) that we know of, but this one is real and will have a very detrimental impact on us if it is allowed to become law; therefore your help is needed. Further, Biotics Research has spent a great deal of money monitoring this situation and will continue to monitor and support their/our position. I might add that I’ve know Denis DeLuca for almost 30 years and know that he and Biotics Research do not “cry wolfâ€, this threat is real and we all need to get behind stopping it. If you have any questions you can reach me at this e-mail or at . Dolores S. Eidenier President D.S.D. International, Ltd. ..
Guest guest
I'm not sure to which exact FDA initiative this refers (I couldn't find anything specific on the FDA website). I was fortunate enough to attend the NIH Office of Dietary Supplement's Research Practicum a few years ago. From what I learned there and from my work as an RD, I would encourage everyone to weigh their communications regarding FDA regulation of supplements cautiously and not jump on a bandwaggon just because it looks like access to supplements is going to be limited. One of the speakers said that whenever dietary supplements are brought up in a bill or by the FDA, congress receives huge amounts of mail - more than relating to any other issue - from people who are writing because they think that " they " are trying to limit access to supplements - regardless of what issue was being discussed related to dietary supplements. I am fine with people using dietary supplements, and use some myself. However, I do believe that dietary supplement manufacturers should be held a standard that ensures that their products contain what they advertsie and that they are not tainted or contaminated with substences not listed on the ingredient label. I also believe that the " proprietary blend " designation should be ended so we know what is in supplements and in what amounts. Guest guest
We do need open labeling. The mystery proprietary blends are bad and dangerous. Add the fortification in foods and the overlapping doses for the day/wk/mo/ yrs are getting ridiculous. Better supplements usually offer some quality control standards but it is a buyer beware world. The aspect of regulation that disturbs, the letter writers, I think, is lack of access. How many good things are going to disappear like laetrile. I looked into that and it seemed like another innocent phytochemical was given the magic bullet double blind treatment and it failed - one nutrient can only do so much and the truckload dose was negative. I would have to reread to be sure. Buckthorn is a ridiculous example in a different way - as an invasive plant I think the purgative herbal medications aren't allowed to be marketed - maybe to not promote planting the invasive plant - but there is already so much of it out there that we don't need to plant any we only need to harvest a little, http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=FDA-2011-D-0376-0079 extended comment period until 12-2-11 Draft Guidance for Industry; Availability: Dietary Supplements; New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues I can't find the actual draft to comment about just that title and a computer form to fill - Where's the beef?
