Just curious what dietary changes you would make for a patient with Edema. I

work in a hospital and consistently have patients who suffer from Pedal Edema

and am not sure what all I can recommend to help with decreasing the Edema

besides the Diaretics that the Doctors use.

You may be able to do a lot - it depends on the cause. For example, do the pts

have a cardiac hx such as HTN and/or CHF? If so, then I recommend you obtain a

diet hx and counsel on a low sodium diet. Is the pedal edema correlated to

extreme obesity? If so, then wt loss counseling is indicated as well as a low

sodium diet.

Call me if you need further help or to discuss.

Hi ,

In many cases, pedal edema is more of a dependent edema then anything else. If

that is the case, nutrition intervention has little to no effect. However, if it

is not, and your patient ambulates, increased porting intake might help.
