yes i have had it too, its called pericarditis and they treated me with 20 mgs

prednisone for a week and then tapered it down, yes it  is scary , kinda like

someone sitting on your chest. and it acan be somewhat dangerous, if the er

staff gets too eager and they give you high doses of blod thinners it can cause

all kinds of serious problems and possible cause a real heart attack,, so we

both ar just two of the iunlucky few who have gotten pericarditis from our RA,

funny thing is i wasnt having any flareups at the time my attack was several

years ago and i havent had one since

Hi everyone, my name is and I am new to the group.

I have just come out of hospital, had to go by ambulance as I was

having severe chest pains and trouble breathing on friday.

The have told me that I have inflmation around the heart which is not

uncommon for people suffering from RA.

Has anyone heard of this or experienced this themselves, as it has

given me and my family a hell of a fright.

I would appreciate any fed back on this. Before my attack I had

struggled all week, first my ankle was swollen and then from my knee

down to my foot it felt like I had a permanent cramp. Soo painful I

couldn't walk for two days !!!

Any help would be apprectiated as I am really struggling here and to

hear from someone else who understands would be wonderful.

regards .

you are lucky , my doctor has an office at the hospital and something i told him

about the pains i was having made him think it wasnt a heart attack . when i

moved in different p[ositions i would get a brief stoppage of the chest pains.

this told my Dr. it may not be a heart attack so he would not let them give me

the bllod thinners until after the ultrasound was done, this confirmed his

suspicions that it was pericarditis . rare enough but the fact i had it and i

have RA is also rarer as i am a male . my Dr. told me the blood thinners can be

quite dangerous if given to someone who is not having a heart attack . i also

have been on prednisone for years, cant get below 10 mgs daily , been on it for

18 yrs , glad u are alright too

Hi !

How frightening that must have been for you and your family! I am very sorry you

experienced that and I hope you are on your way to feeling better soon! I

haven't experienced it, but have been told and read in my pamphlets provided to

me by my doctor that it can affect the lungs and heart and even the eyes.  This

is a very caring supportive wonderful group and all the members here are amazing

support! It's very educational too with all of the studies and information

posts on.

, sorry to be so long in the reply ,was real sick the last few days and

haven't hit the mailbox. I had the same experience. The pain was not only

isolated to my heart area but also wrapped around my back. It seemed to come on

overnight. We raced to the Hospital Emergency Room and a few tests later , EKG,

X-ray,Ultra Sound, then the ER Doc came in and said not a heart attack but

Pleural Effusion. Liquid was building up in my lungs, he declined treating me

and told me to see my own PCP. I made an appointment  the next morning and when

I saw her she ordered another chest x-ray and was quite surprised to find it was

almost completely healed. she also declined to " medicate me " . Thank goodness I

already do enough. It was a scare though.Thats my story, don't know if its any

help, but I sure do relate to the scare. There are so many quirky side effects

to R.A.that they don't put on the average LEARN ABOUT R.A. page and hence my

appreciation for this

group for all our unanswered questions that help to allay our fears and

worries.
