June 30, 2008 — Infants with a birth weight of more than 4.54 kg have

an increased risk for the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as

an adult, according to the results of a large, prospective cohort

study reported in the June 30 Online First issue of the ls of the

Rheumatic Diseases.

" The 'fetal origins of adult disease' hypothesis suggests the uterine

environment can influence the susceptibility of a fetus to future

disease, " write L.A. Mandl, from the Hospital for Special Surgery in

New York, NY, and colleagues. " We examine whether the fetal

environment, as reflected by birthweight, could modulate an

individual's future risk of . . . RA. "
