Hi :

I am 68, and I had a total hip replacement 18 months ago.  I had no problems

with the surgery, and my recovery has been wonderful. I have no hip pain, no

limping, and I don't need a cane or walker. I would not hesitate to have my

other hip done.  I also had a total knee replacement 3 years ago, with the same

great results.

Wishing you good luck with your hip surgery, and I hope this information helps.

Hugs, Barbara

Hi Everyone,

I had a feeling when I got back the X-ray results that said I had NO

cartilage left in my right hip that I might be on my way to a hip

replacement. Well, I today I had my follow-up appointment with my

rheumatologist, and she said that I should consider surgery on my hip.

I tend not to be afraid of most medical procedures. I'm usually

grateful for the scientific advances. But, I have to admit that hip

surgery scares me somewhat. Mostly, I'm afraid because my uncle had

both of hips replaced 15 years ago at the same age I am now (he's my

dad's baby brother), and ended up permanently disabled.

So I just wanted to know if anyone here has had hip replacement, and

how it turned out. Thank you.

Hello, ! I have had both my hips replaced, due to RA. 2004

and 2005. It is a miracle and the recovery is easy. The pain is

immediately gone!!! Yes, the incision hurts, but every day that

discomfort is less. Do not be afraid. gentle hugs! Marcia in NY

Hi ,

They have come a LONG way in hip replacement in the last 15 years, I would say

to just make sure you have a GREAT doctor in a GREAT facility who has done alot

of them. The only personal experience I have is my 65 year old cousin who had

polio as a child, he had his hip replaced a year and a half ago because he

couldn't stand the pain any longer, it turned out so well that he was recently

written up in the New England Journal. From everyone I know the pain will drive

you to get it done so you might as well get it done sooner than later. in

I have a friend who had a hip replacement several years ago, and she

got along splendidly. She didn't have any trouble at all.

I have another friend who is 90 something. I saw her at one time, and

she was using a walker and looked very feeble. The next time I saw her,

she had had a hip replacement, and it made a new woman out of her. I

couldn't believe the difference.

I imagine that they have improved on the procedure since your uncle's

hip replacement.
