Guest guest
Hi Joy: If you mean the back pain that goes over your hip, down your buttucks, down your leg behind your thigh, all the way to your foot, I sure have. It is very nasty. I had lots of P.T., used a walker and cane when I could walk. Took quite a while to get rid of it. Guest guest
Not sure what you mean about the pain going over the hip then down the buttocks. It's the irritated sciatic nerve pain that mainly goes staight down the back of your leg. Guest guest
Hi Joy! My pain varies from intense lower back pain, to sometimes feeling something is ripping or tearing when I move a certain way, also numbness radiates down my leg. Mine has been treated with physical therapy when needed and for the lower back pain which I always seem to have, I use heat therapy. Guest guest
Yes, that's true. At the time I was in a bad car accident, my back was severely injured, and lost all feeling from the waist down. After several weeks of traction, I had pain that radiated down my hip in the back, down my buttucks to the sciatica nerve, from that nerve to my feet. Yes, it goes down the back of the leg, and the pain is outrageous. I could not sit for very long, and not in the beginning. It was either bed rest, or stand when possible. Do you have that now? If so, are you having PT? It does take time for that to get better. Are you able to walk, or do you use crutches and a cane? Guest guest
My leg pain goes down the side and sometimes the front of my leg. My rheumy says it's the nerve in my back being squeezed by inflammation. It's horrible at night, trying to sleep. Guest guest
Check into Active Release techniques (www.activerelease.com). It is a soft tissue technique that can really work wonders for sciatica. Guest guest
I don't have sciatica pain but my mom does though. Although I had a related problem in the past so know how bad the pain can be. Also had very bad radiating pain down my arms prior to my cervical spine surgery. Last fall I had piriformis syndrome which is inflammation of the piriformis muscle in our buttock. The p muscles lies on top of the sciatic nerve where it passes through our buttocks. When the p muscle is inflammed it irritates the sciatic nerve causing radiating pain. But now down my leg. Guest guest
Well my rheumie said it sounded like sciatica from the pain I was telling her from and she had me move my leg around etc... so I wonder if I go to a neurologist now or what? I know my Mom has had problems on and off with this most of her adult life. I have been using my anti inflammatory more and the heating pad seems to help. Feels better today than yesterday. I read online that if you take an aspirin or motrin everyday it will help it from flairing up...who knows. I am so sick of being in pain from one thing or another. Thanks for all your responses. I appreciate it. Guest guest
I have dealt with sciatica since a car accident in 2001. Chiro the whole deal. Heat at night is the best relief I get. Even when my RA is not screaming the sciatica is always there. I do get a shot about every 4 months. My doc says its a bursa sac but it has always been called sciatica by the other doctors. Who knows. All I can say is heat. Jacuzzi also. I dont have one but I will stand by the jets in our pool and I get relief. Carol Re: [ ] sciatica Hi Joy-- I don't know much about much of anything, but I sure know Sciatica well. Mine was due to DDD ( Degenerative Disc Disease ). I took a double handful of pills for 7 years plus and was barely human. I tried injections, meds, hanging upside down ( just made the blood rush to my head-yuk ), physical therapy, ultrasonic therapies, TENS unit, Morphine pump trial, Chiropractic ( helped a bit ). Finally, I found a pain specialist that after many tests decided that Radio Wave Abluation was indicated. I went from near-constant agony to a very tolerable and infrequent pain. I sure wish that I could use this same method for other pain issues! They take a kind of needle-type probe and stick it in so that the radio waves kill the nerve that sends the pain message. I don't know the technical jargon. They don't knock you out, because you have to answer questions while they work. They did give me Versed to help. It is painful, but well worth it. After over 7 years of agony dealing with Sciatica, what was one hour of pain? Nothing! I have been nearly symptom free for 9 years now. It was a blessing. I hope that helps you Joy-- in SC Any of you have problems with Sciatica.. if so what helps and what type of doc is best to see for this. Thanks, Joy
Guest guest
Hi Joy I've had bouts of sciatica for 9 years. The first couple of times my pcp gave me vicodin. After that it was PT, heat & ice, electro stim , massage and Advil. Now when I feel it coming on, I immediately do the heat & ice and electro stim ( you can get them now fairly inexpensively). That usually does the trick although it might take a week or so. I haven't had a bout of sciatica since being diagnosed with RA a month ago, but I would probably use the same routine anyway. Hope this helps.
