Guest guest
Check out the prices on www.drugstore.com I have been using them for several years and have been really happy with the prices and the service. Your doctor can call the prescription into 1-800-drugstore and they also have a fax in case it is a controlled substance the doctor can then fax it to them. I takes the doctors office awhile to get the hang of it I have to remind mine whenever I need refills I think I finally got them broken in now! I save anywhere from one to two hundred dollars a month by using them it depends on what I am needing to have filled but I have not found anyone else on line who can beat their prices. They are owned by the same corporation as the Rite Aid stores so they are well known but few people know that they are on line. Hope this helps I lost my insurance too and this has really saved us!! Peace, Sherry Dear group,I would like to hear from people who switched from Minocycline to Doxy.I'm losing my insurance and am considering the switch because of cost. I have been on Mino for 3 years and am doing well on it.My pharmacist will charge about $124 for 60 capules of Lederle/ESI MinocylineDoes anyone have a cheaper source? Guest guest
Hi, I have the hyperpigmentation from the mino. I do not go into the sun. After starting the mino started looking tan, Every place that I had a scar now shows up white. Every time I nick myself or scrape it is whiter than the rest of me. It is caused from the mino. I will take the hyperpigmentation to the scleroderma any day. Blessings Judy
Guest guest
Hi Sharon, Yes, like you, my skin has turned much darker than before but some areas seem to be definitely darker. The hands are much darker and also the feet. I wonder if the skin is darker in those areas where RA has been troublesome in the joints. I did read in an earlier post from a group member about looking tanned. from taking Minocin. Take care, Zanash
Guest guest
Hi Sharon Doxycycline makes you more sensitive to sunlight. You can burn more easily, and if you are naturally olive or brown skinned, you will go darker where the sunlight hits your skin. In my case, my habds and feet and face are much darker because they see the sun more. I think that's a bit different from the hyperpigmentation. Dr Chiu reduced my minocycline dosage when I started to get black patches on my legs. He said it would come on the face as well if I didn't reduce it. Look up the FAQ as Ethel suggests. > From: " shar " <shar@...> > Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 23:54:33 -0700 > " Sherry " <tifkas@...> > Cc: <rheumatic > > Subject: Re: rheumatic Doxycycline > > Hi Sharon, > > Yes, like you, my skin has turned much darker than before but some areas > seem to be definitely darker. Guest guest
Connie, that's why my gp took me off the Minocycline, because of the fungus problems. Now he mentioned he would put me back on it mentioning it has anti inflammatory properties. He wondered why A. gave me Biaxon as it hasn't any anti inflammatory but she reckoned it would bring my titre down. I am on Nystatin two, twice daily. I know in the past I've read Minocycline can turn thyroid tissue black and perhaps cause problems with thyroid. I have a terrible pressure at the base of my throat and wonder about thyroid Minocycline connection. As I haven't taken it for over a year, would it clear itself or stay, if that's the problem there. I'll have to check around and see what I can come up with. Thanks so much, Connie, for your support and all the great information. Hugs, Bev Hi Bev, I know you've had a pretty severe fungus problem to deal with recently, but maybe the Minocin wasn't the causative factor?? I remember reading that Minocin actually has anti-fungal properties and have found the following abstract: [Effect of minocycline on Candida albicans. "In vitro" study: comparison with tetracycline] Lavarde V, Acar JF, Drouhet E Pathol Biol (Paris) 1975 Nov 23:725-8 BROWSE : Pathol Biol (Paris) • Volume 23 • Issue 9 VIEW : MEDLINE, full MEDLINE, related records Abstract The action of minocycline has been studied in comparison with tetracycline on 52 strains of "C. albicans" by M.I.C. on Agar medium and by the dellophane transfer. A fungistatic activity was observed above 4 mug/ml, and a fungicidal activity above 1000 mug/ml, whereas tetracycline "in vitro" proved to be ineffective. .....just wondering..... Guest guest
Thanks, Connie. I read in the bios the Doxycycline made such a huge difference in some of the cases of SD. That's what made me think it might be a good choice. I took Minocycline for almost two years, but 7 days a week at 200 mg a day and according to my RD haven't got RA or PA at present, my original diagnosis. I was wondering if the Minocycline did work for it. Thanks, Connie. :>) Bev Hi Bev, More and more doctors are at least opting for Minocycline due to its anti-inflammatory properties. (I wonder if doxycycline has the same characteristic?) In all likelihood, the reason Dr. Armstrong gave you the Biaxin is not to treat the inflammation, but to treat the "bugs" in your system.....the cornerstone of the AP. I know its hard sometimes to have to justify to one doctor the actions or prescriptions of another......but the good thing is, one of these days, you will start getting better and your questioning doctor will see it for himself. Nystatin really helped to get me back on track as far as yeast goes. I hope it does the same for you. Take care, Connie

Guest guest
Thanks , I never thought it might be a herx. A friend suggested it might be yeast, and as I had a yeast problem elswhere also, I just thought it sounded plausible. I'll still give the doxy a rest for a couple of weeks to see if things settle down, and meanwhile carry on with the Oregano and Olive leaf extract. The minocin that I was taking before I started Doxy also helped. They say that you dont get the yeast infections with minocin, its in the same class of drugs as Doxy, you might ask your doc about that. I havent had side effects from either of those yet. a [ ] Doxycycline My rheumie is now trying me on Doxycycline an antibiotic. Guest guest
sorry, computer oops. , I started on Minocin 10 yrs ago and after 5 or 6 yrs, my Dr switched me to Doxy but it didn't work as well for me, so back to Minocin 3 x's weekly and Zithramax 2's weekly. So far so good and it's been years. I do know that Doxy does work well for many here on this list. Maybe some will give you their input. I'd say it's worth a try for you if you had problems w/Minocin after awhile. **************Looking for love this summer? Find it now on AOL Personals. Guest guest
, Doxy works well, but for me it stopped working after a year or so. My doctor said that often happens. Guest guest
In response to the e-mails of , and , regarding Doxy and minocin-I definitely agree with about the Doxy stopping to work. 100 mg. of Doxycycline twice a day, worked very well to treat my reactive arthritis. After about 1 year, it stopped working, and I was given 100 mg of Minocin, twice a day, instead. (Actually, I was first on Minocycline, but that didn't work as well, except for brand,, which my mail-order pharmacy from the insurance wouldn't get for me). The Minocin has worked very well for me. A few weeks ago, I was bitten by a tick and needed to be on doxycycline for three weeks, the typical treatment for ticks. Forgetting how sick I become when off the Minocin, I agreed to go off of it, because my rheumie said I couldn't take the two antibiotics together. What a mistake! Within a few days of being off Minocin, I started to deteriorate. By two weeks, I was back to sleeping all day, having horrible joint pains, gross looking eyes when I awaken, and suffering terrible memory loss (does anyone else have this problem with their memory? I just don't understand it.) So, against doctors wishes, I went back on the Minocin while still on doxycycline. It messed with my stomach, but I took large amounts of acidophilus with the antibiotics. I'm starting to recuperate, now that I have been back on the Minocin for a week and a half (except for my memory returning). Isn't that proof enough that the Minocin does treat autoimmune illnesses? I can't understand when I read here that people are having problems convincing their rheumies to let them try antibiotic therapy. I would run far away from those doctors. Good luck with the Doxy. Guest guest
That's odd that you felt so sick after stopping the Minocin for a few days. I thought you could be off it for a week or two without feeling any ill effects. As for the memory loss, you are not alone. For the first 6-8 months I was on Minocin I thought I was losing my mind. How my husband put up with me is a nothing short of miraculous. I forgot everything and I was always the organizer in the family. Thank God that passed. Guest guest
It's not the Minocin causing memory loss.it's the disease. It also causes depression.. Please if you have not read or have read it a long time ago go to http://rheumatic.org/support.htm or read doc Browns book. Guest guest
And I can't believe docs who give out long term antibiotics do not give diflucan to the patients after a few months. You were lucky Mona that you were helped with the acidophilis.
