Guest guest
Hello , See that there has been some good imput about your recent blood test query, and what exactly is measured. Just thought I would add a PS as this is a test often done in Haematology field. Yes it is a way of looking in more detail at the immune proteins that are circulating in the blood stream at a certain time. The most basic test looking at this area is the Immunoglobulin measurement, which measures the totals for the different groups of immunoglobulins IgG IgA and IgM which do different jobs. There are also subgroups. There is a normal range for each, and in certain diseases, and treatment, the balance between them is often abnormal. Often in RA etc IgG is elevated, the immune response in overdrive, from the b cells producing overtime. Treatments DMards, biologics may modify this.Sometimes levels of certain classes are below normal and infection is a risk. Electrophoresis gives a clearer more precise pattern information as to whether there is an overall increase in a globulin class, as would be from general overactivity of the immune responding cells, or what can sometimes be seen a very particular protein blip or spike on the band, suggesting just one particular line of immune cells producing it. This can sometimes be seen alongside autoimmune disorders, and would just be observed over time,eg every 6 months if all else was well. IgG is often elevated in some ongoing liver problems also. Hope this helps and hope it is generally accurate enough so you can ask your doc more specifically about your results, but I shouldn't have thought you need be worried. Best wishes, doc, retired
