Guest guest
I used to love pilates before the FMS and RA. Now I can't even bend to touch the floor! I'm stuck with the water aerobics and walking and simple stretching the PT gives me...let me know how it goes!! From: <man_u8@...> Subject: [ ] Yoga during a flare up Date: Friday, July 25, 2008, 7:01 PM Hello all, I have been feeling miserable w/ a flare up. I hurt. There is a gym across the street from where I just moved too. They offer free yoga and pilates w/ membership. I did yoga and pilates before I got diagnosed w/ RA...I haven't tried it since. I am going to check out the class. Has anyone else tried it, especially during a flare?
Guest guest
Well, I wish it would have gone better. It was beginning yoga and I was sweating, my feet started to swell to the point that I was almost in tears while trying to do some of the poses. I used to love yoga and pilates (granted that was all before RA FMS). I know I need to get back into shape...but damn. It hurt!! I don't know what to do. I want to join the gym so I can get back into shape and get my body and mind to where I need to be. I am going to talk to a trainer on Monday to see how I can slowly get back into shape. I thought yoga would have been the kindest to my joints. Like I said, my feet were starting to swell that I was almost in tears. I was sweating really bad too. Damn, I thought I could do this!?!? > > From: <man_u8@...> > Subject: [ ] Yoga during a flare up > > Date: Friday, July 25, 2008, 7:01 PM > > > > > > > Hello all, I have been feeling miserable w/ a flare up. Guest guest
I did restorative yoga and gentle yoga during flares. Both were very helpful. However, you're more likely to find these types of classes at yoga-specific studios, as gyms usually offer the most common hatha yoga. I bought a gentle yoga book at and Noble. It's great and came with a dvd. You can also find tutorials for restorative yoga online. Hope you find something that helps.
Guest guest
I haven't had any luck with Yoga/Pilates . I used to do both prior to RA as well. RA really has weakened my muscles and I've been having a hard time getting back to where I was. But if I were you, I'd give a couple of classes a try. You never know! Guest guest
I started Pilates four months ago and it's been great. I have more mobility back in my shoulder. I do have 1 hour private lessons at a pilates only studio and it's expensive but i think worth it. She knows I have RA and we're careful. The studio has a few patients that have RA working out there. in PA Re: [ ] Yoga during a flare up I haven't had any luck with Yoga/Pilates . I used to do both prior to RA as well. Guest guest
What is nice, is that the gym offers free pilates and yoga classes w/ membership. I also have discounted access to trainers. I am thinking about seeing a trainer to get a gentle excerise program that won't make me hurt so damn much. When I took beginning yoga years ago, the class concentrated more on breathing. Granted, the last time I took yoga was before RA/FMS and I was living at sea level. I was just wondering if I wam trying to do too much to fast. Thanks for all your supprt. > > I started Pilates four months ago and it's been great. I have more mobility back in my shoulder. Guest guest
I do Yoga since my RA, and it doesn't bother me. But I use modifications that I have learned from DVD's and my Physical Therapist. I don't usually do anything physical during a flare up, not even PT..... just because I am worried it will make it worse. I love yoga though...not so much pilates...need better abs first! Hope it works out for you. > > Hello all, I have been feeling miserable w/ a flare up. I hurt. There > is a gym across the street from where I just moved too. Guest guest
I'm so sorry ! I know it's very frustrating! Especially when trying to do exercises that we actually LOVE doing! I have issues doing my walking most days..the treadmill seems to be hurting my shins for some reason! My physical therapist tries to help me come up with exercises I can do since he understands RA and FMS and pain. Have you ever tried those exercise bands? I want to get a set that works the arms and legs. Another PT at his office is offering a 6 week course on nutrition and exercises. I wanted to find out if he will be working with those that have chronic pain illnesses and maybe try to sign up for that. The only luck I've had with lack of knee swelling is when I do the pool therapy. Guest guest
Thanks Steph. I am meeting w/ a trainer tomorrow and I want to see what he/she has to offer. I will go back to yoga (hopefully, I will not be in the middle of a nasty flare and I will pop a few vicodin before). It's just so frustrating. I am working w/ my therapist to accept who I am today, but I am finding it extremely difficult. If there is a God, why did He keep me alive after the sepsis? I have lost everything and I feel soo hopeless. Guest guest
My first CBT therapist was really religious. I used to feel like I was being punished for being ill and losing my career right out of college due to falling ill. She reminded me that we all have a purpose..that bad and good things happen to everyone wheather they are a bad or good person. Our purpose might be to educate and provide support to those that get sick young like we did as well as struggling emotionally like we do. I've been making a good bit of headway with the CBT and panic but somedays are better than others. I think after awhile we see it makes us more stronger human beings and more compassionate. I keep you in my thoughts and prayers good luck with the trainer! I'm restarting physical therapy Wednesday for the first time in a year!! I'm excited to get those muscles stretching even though I know there will be pain...I remind myself no pain no gain and pain is weakness leaving my body. I also think of Reeve when I'm doing that painful stuff. He took steps when he was told he never would again! Miracles are out there and I hope we get ours:) From: <man_u8@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Yoga during a flare up Date: Sunday, July 27, 2008, 9:52 PM Thanks Steph. Guest guest
, I started trying to " workout " everyday just before my RA hit. I started collecting some exercise DVD's from Ebay. I started learning how to do Pilates from the DVD's. From what I understand so far, the Pilates will give you better abs because you are constantly trying to hold in your stomach muscles while doing the exercises. That's like the whole point of the Pilates. I started trying them because I wanted to get better abs also. I've never had stomach muscles and it's really been taking a toll on my back lately. I was able to find a couple Pilate DVD's that are geared toward those who have physical limitations. I like them, but they tire me out a lot when I do them, what with having to hold in my stomach the whole time. I'd like to try the yoga sometime. I got a couple books and DVD's on yoga, but never got around to trying it because when the RA hit, I stopped everything. I gotta get back to it though, I know. I feel so much better when I do. Right now it seems almost too much for me just to keep up with babysitting my granddaughter during the day. But its getting harder and harder to get up off the floor when I'm playing with her - my muscles are getting weaker and weaker and I know that is not good. I keep on trying, [ ] Re: Yoga during a flare up I do Yoga since my RA, and it doesn't bother me. But I use modifications that I have learned from DVD's and my Physical Therapist. Guest guest
, I LOVED pilates. Granted I was doing it before I got diagnosed w/ RA. I was planning on getting back into it before this whole sepsis, hernia deal. I have waited this long, so a few more months isn't going to hurt me. I guess do as much as your body will let you. > > > > Hello all, I have been feeling miserable w/ a flare up. I hurt. There > > is a gym across the street from where I just moved too.
