As I said earlier, I'm on 4 MTX pills a week and one Arava a day. I am down

to 5 mg of Prednisone each day.

My face keeps breaking out. I might add that I'm 64 and am allergic to

tomatoes (they make my face break out), but I've really been avoiding them

religiously.

Is anyone else having this reaction to meds?

I've been on mtx for 9 years with the only result of thinning hair but I was on

pred for 3 weeks a month ago and it did nasty things to my skin, felt scaly like

and broke out when it was exposed to the sun with sunscreen. I hate pred and

only take it when in dire straits. mary in pa

DD,

I have only been on the Arava for 3 weeks, but I have had no

problems with my skin breaking out from it nor the MTX.

Sorry that I am no help.

dd - Prednisone can definitely cause breakouts/zits on your face and

other places. My doc had always warned me about that common side

effect. It's one of the reasons (in addition to severe mood swings and

weight gain) that I refuse steriods now.

I haven't but I've seen patients get breakouts from various meds. Sometimes its

acne, sometimes its a rash do to allergy or just a side effect.

Hi ,

I was interested reading your post about thinning hair from MTX,my

middle daughter is a hairdresser and she said in the last six months

I have lost half of my hair again!!! It is really frightening,

though I am lucky I had extremly thick hair to start with.

I have been off MTX for three months now, and the Rhematologist said

it is probably caused from the predisolone. Who knows, but if I

continue to loose hair at the rate I am going I won't have any hair

left!!! Has anyone else out there had these problems?

MTX caused my hair to get very thin and I didn't have a thick head of

it to begin with. It did stop after 6-9 mos. and my rheummy says that

it will grow back. I have added Arava and guess what one of the side

effects is....yep thinning hair.

I feel blessed though, so many women and men are bald because from

chemo for cancer treatment. Personally, I would rather have RA.

There are hair products that do make your hair look thicker (thank

goodness) but I can never seem to get the back to look fuller. This I

can live with, I prefer thin hair rather than not trying to control

the RA.

My hair starting falling out when I started the MTX, but upping the Folic Acid

stopped that. I do notice a bit more hair loss on the day after I take the MTX

though. I remember how I felt though when it was falling out - terrified!

Nobody wants to be vain, but I think the last thing anybody wants is another

problem to worry about.

Some hair products that help the hair and the scalp so that the hair doesn't

thin too much to fall out is Nioxin..most salons do carry it.  It worked well

for me.  If you like fullness Redken has this shampoo called bodyful and you can

feel the thickness while washing the hair.  They also have a weightlifter from

the Redken Body full line that makes it look thicker when blow drying:)
