Guest guest
Clora, it has recently been in the news that a low carb diet is the best for losing weight. As a diabetic, that's the diet I have to follow, anyway. I have kept off 20 pounds that I lost 8-9 years ago. I'm still a little overweight, but only about 10 pounds. Exercising also helped me lose weight. If you can do any physical activity, try it. Start off small. Just walking is good. It's really hard to lose weight, and you have a lot more to lose than I had. Good luck! Sue On Saturday, July 26, 2008, at 10:57 AM, CLORA wrote: > My question is for people with RA that had to > lose wwight, how did you do it??? please tell me so I can lose > weight. Guest guest
Clora I know how you feel. I moved to NJ weighing in at 160 I am 5'8 " so that was great for me. 5 years later 215. I am starting a new exercise program when it gets here. Its called beach body. Now I know I will never be 160 again but would be thrilled to be 190. It is 6 different CDS of workouts similar to ty-bow which I did to stay in shape. I was not dealing with fibro,RA,IC or any of the other crap I now have. but the ither day I was trying to fit into a pair of pants and unfortunately they only fit if I never want to sit again.. sheesh I know that the exercise in these tapes is gonna be killer but hell Im gonna hurt anyway so why not hurt and get some good out it. Now this is a depending on me actually getting my butt off the couch and getting busy.I am going to adjust my diet as well. I have type 2 diabetes so I need to follow a diet anyway. Soo the days of cartons of ice cream are over Keep your fingers crossed for me. I will need all the help I can get..LOL I hope all of y'all are having a good dayt, or at least a tolerable one. Guest guest
Heidi, Aren't we lucky to have both RA and diabetes? At least I don't have fibro, as you do. I haven't eaten any ice cream in ages, although I do occasionally eat a dessert but cut out other carbs at the meal. And every night I eat one small piece of chocolate. I think I have myself pretty well programmed to eat a correct diet for diabetes. If you cut out most carbs, you should be able to lose some weight. Plus, it would be great for your blood sugars, too, as is exercise. Exercise is the hardest for me, and I'm afraid I'm not doing much these days. Guest guest
I have gained alot of wieght too since I got RA because of the pain etc. I have found the best way is Pysical Therapy to start. They can start you off light, or in the pool...and then gently work your way up to a full exercise routine. I did it two years ago, and lost 30 lbs. I have since gained it back...because of life/stres etc...but just recently started going back to PT. At first it killed me...I hurt soooo bad...but every visit, I felt better and better. I had 4 visits now, and this past thursday, I actually asked for extra exercises because I was feeling so much better. It also helps too that they use hot compress before I start and cold compress with electric stim afterward. There is a lady that is 400+ lbs at my PT office with RA and she is trying. It just has to be a slow process. Eventually your muscles will get stronger to support your joints better, so there is not as much pressure (pain too)...then eventually you'll start losing weight. Just try not to get discouraged at first. It will take a while. " Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keeeep swiming...swimmming....swiiimmming " - Finding Nemo I have to tell myself that everyday! Good luck. I know it's hard. I can relate completely. - > > All the group. > > Thats a good question about exercising to keep in shape, to lose > weight. I have lost weight maybe 10 times in my life from different > ways. 1. Guest guest
Heidi and Group Exactly Heidi M. Thats the problem I have to lose weight. Now when any of my other doctors say, " Don't forget to exercise Clora. " I say well I would if I could. RA won't let me do but the basic. " I don't even think the doctors think about how much pain we are in. Because they dont have RA. If they did they wouldnt tell us to exercise , especially when we just told them how much pain we are in. Any way I still have to lose weight. So I am trying a little of what everyone suggest, except exercise. Cause right now I am to much pain to do anything but the basics in life. Hopefully when I see my RA Wednesday she can give me something to help my pain. I am not going to take prednissone if I can help it. I am going to ask her for something elese. Maybe injections the kind you take home. or may be some humirin. If I spelled it right. but i heard some of you say it helps you. Thank you everyone for your great input. Guest guest
I ride a recumbent bike 5 days per week for 45 minutes and then I stretch for 10 minutes after. I've found that this has kept my weight in the healthy range for my height and helped somewhat with the fatigue, although I still needed to be medicated for that. I do plan on talking to my doctor about my muscle strength when I go this week. I used to lift weights prior to my RA getting bad and I'm still not able to do so even though I've had a good response to Humira. Guest guest
It'll probably be awhile before you were tried on Humira. You have to try some of the DMARD's first (Plaquenil, Methotrexate, etc.) before you can go onto a biologic such as Humira or Enbrel. Most insurances require you to have tried the DMARD's first as well. And the DMARD's are slow acting drugs that take awhile to build up in your system to start working. One of the things my Rheumatologist told me was to be patient, and while it is very hard to do, he was right. Unfortunately there's no quick fix to RA. Maybe your doctor could have you try a different pain medicine. They all work differently so you may have to try a bunch to see what works for you. Guest guest
Hi Lori, I could have went on one of the biologics from the very beginning, I have Cigna, I don't need referrals, it's very convenient, my doctor offered me everything from the start, I was just too chicken, that was 9 years ago and I thought they were too " new " for me. mary in pa [ ] Re: Exercising with RA Heidi and Group Exactly Heidi M. Guest guest
All the rheumatologists and doctors swear that exercising alleviates pain eventually as it helps keep the muscles and ligaments and tendons in shape. My doctor suggested starting out at 5 minutes and working my way up to more. To break up working out in increments. Then a good hot bath. It isn't easy but most things in life just are not I am finding out. I have bilateral patella femoral syndrome, Fibromyalgia, seronegative RA and something going on with the connective tissues as well as heart and liver disease and asthma. Even losing 1 pound feels to the knees like losing 4 pounds. The best classes are the ones the Arthritis Foundation offers as they are designed to make us not hurt. Water therapy in the pool is the best, my doctor just stated that today to me. Tai chi is also very good:) From: CLORA <clora4jesus@...> Subject: [ ] Exercising with RA Date: Saturday, July 26, 2008, 10:57 AM All the group. Guest guest
Hi, I'm sorry if I'm jumping in on this mid-stream, I just got my laptop back and am missing many posts. I have recently lost about 14 pounds and 2 sizes. Yup, my hips are still hurting and my fingers, etc...but on the good days I exercise, I just don't go crazy. I have something called Red. Its a round chair that swivels and it has side arms too so you can hold on. its great for legs , lower back, thighs and hips, all that hurt me, but on good days, helps me. I bought it with the rope cables so I could work my upper body. As far as food , I've been loading up on antioxidants such as blueberries, it helps that its one of my favorite foods. No fast foods at all, no soda, just ice water, and i've discovered Purple 7 which is high in antioxidants. It's been working for me, I feel great, I've been dating, and for the first time in a long time, I bought a skort last night, and a sleeveless blouse that made me feel sexy, 2 sizes smaller than normal, and i'm wearing it tonight on my date with a pretty blouse over it ( i'd never go sleeveless! ) but it all looks pretty! I feel good about myself, I'm eating healthy, have no desire for the bad stuff , and am handling what comes my way with the help of you guys here on the list and my other friends on the chat group. I can't exercise every day , only when my body says I can, and I never know if it will be 10 min or 20 min, but I get some in! Take care! Heidi in Mass. In a message dated 7/29/2008 5:26:16 A.M. Guest guest
Heidi, Of all of my diseases, I like diabetes the best, LOL. That's because you can take measures to control it, unlike with RA. Since our bodies cannot metabolize carbs adequately, it makes sense to avoid them as much as we can. But that doesn't mean giving up everything completely. The key is moderation, and 1-2 cookies would be much better than the whole box, LOL. You just have to re-program yourself. When your BG's are under control, you actually lose some of those cravings that high BG's bring on. Guest guest
Heidi and Mylinda, and Group Woo Hoo Heide. You lost weight on predisone. Tell us again how you did it. I will try everything once. As long it is legal. I can't sleep. haaaaaaaaa. tomorrow is my big day. To see the doc about injections. It's been a year since I been seeing the rheumy, I have went straight down hill. This past month talking to the group has really helped. I understand more about RA now. I heard a lot of the meds everyone takes. I take MTX, plaqunile and something else. Its not working or its working and I don't know it lol cause I have so much pain. I know I said that a lot about pain. Sorry I hope I haven't been complaining so much. But tomorrow is a new day. And Praise God I know I am going to get help. Everyones email is great. I love to hear the praises everyone give on our triouphs. And the compassion everyone has here. It's great how we can talk to each other about our feelings. I feel pretty good right now. I need to exercise. I am going to look into water exercise. I heard yoga is good too. gently hugs to everyone Clora, cant sleep
