To adjust a cane, stand straight and have the cane on the side you will be

using. The top of the cane, the grip, should reach the wrist. Cut or adjust

it to fit that distance, then use it to get used to it. We are taught to use

the cane on the other side of your body, but I don't believe that. Use it in

whichever hand is comfortable. I have 2 that are Hugo brand and will break

down and store. The elastic cord will bring them back straight when you need

it. Also, the top has adjustable holes for times when you can't stand that

tall. Whatever you do, DO NOT get a cane with the rounded top! The palm of

your hand isn't built that way, so the handle cannot be supportive. If you

can't find a cane to fit you, find someone that can remove part of it.

my attorney told me I need to ask for a prescription for a cane so

that it would be documented in my medical records as necessary for me

to walk with it and I think I need a handicapped sticker or tag for

my car cause sometimes its hard for me to walk far into stores now.I

have avoided that cause I want to be able to walk for some exercise

and that was one way that I made myself do some physical exercise was

to walk through parking lots and into stores and offices when I go

out.I told my pain doctor I had to buy one the last time I was there

and I had asked him for prednisone for the pain and stiffness in my

lower back and hands and feet.I cant stand up straight now sometimes

and need the cane to help me stand up or pick up my feet and move

forward.the one I bought cost me two dollars at a discount store but

it doesnt have a wide enough tip at the bottom and seems to be kind

of hard and uncomfortable for me to use it.I maybe need one that is

adjustable and has a wider tip at the bottom to give me more

stability and traction when I lean on it.Im having trouble with my

balance and with juggling my bag and the cane, opening doors and stuff

when I go in places.I dont know what kind of doctor would be able to

prescribe this or where I might buy the kind I need.the ones online

cost 40.00 or more.I dont want an ugly one but it doesnt have to be

fancy either.I dont like how people stare at me when I have it

sometimes but if I dont have it pharmacists give me a hard time about

the amount of pain meds I need.I am just caught in a bad place

wanting to be as normal as I can without calling attention to myself

or having people treat me badly cause I dont appear to look sick on

the outside when I go for treatment or medicine.I dont like feeling

like I look old before my time,or older than I am at age 48.I am

still vain like many women are and being single I know that men dont

find women with this kind of problem very interesting or

attractive. It a real quandry Im in,needing this to be mobile enough

to get to the bathroom sometimes or kitchen especially in the

mornings but not liking to use the thing, feeling awkward or different

from other people my age.I am sure Im not the only one who feels this.

They have beautiful canes at CVS, check them out! You can pick up an

application for a disability placard at your local tag agency. The

rheumy has to fill out part of the app, and you will also have to fill

out a portion, and mail it off. Contact your tag agency, it might work

differently in your state. Sometimes you can just go online, and

download the app, if they have a website. Tawny
