Announcement of 6th Annual Update and HIV training Course On behalf of

CHART-INDIA (The USF-India Center for HIV/AIDS, Health, Research and Training -

Tampa, Florida, USA) and the Infectious Disease Center,

Ahmedabad, India we would like to welcome you to the The Sixth

Annual HIV update on 27 and 28 of January 2007 followed by Course in HIV

Medicine from January 29th – February 4th 2007, at the

Infectious Disease Clinic and affiliated Hospitals, Ahmedabad, India.

The Curriculum

The training curriculum combines cutting edge medical, scientific and

psychosocial information with an instructional methodology that is

sensitive and relevant to the needs of Indian physicians. The curriculum is

crafted specifically to prepare participants to meet the difficult tasks of

diagnosing, managing and treating HIV disease.

Our objectives are that by the end of the training, participants will be able

to:

1. Understand the transmission, epidemiology, screening for and

diagnosis of HIV/AIDS in resource constrained settings.

2. Identify & describe clinical manifestations of HIV disease.

3. Apply current strategies to manage and treat HIV disease.

4. Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of new and experimental

protocols for the diagnosis, prevention and management of opportunistic

infections.

5. Develop clinical research protocols.

6. Interpret published medical literature.

7. Understand the ethical and legal issues involved in

screening, managing and caring for people living with HIV/AIDS.

8. Understand the value of providing integrated and comprehensive services for

HIV/AIDS patients such as counseling, social support and nutritional

supplementation to enhance patient adherence and to reduce drug resistance for

better treatment outcomes.

9. Recognize the importance of maintaining patient records in order to provide

better clinical care as well as for future research and epidemiological

surveillance.

Course Format

The training is comprised of didactic lectures, case presentations and

discussions, participation in in-patient rounds, grand rounds and

attending outpatient clinics. In addition, participants will visit a

state-of-the-art laboratory to understand diagnostic methods of

opportunistic infections, determining CD4/CD8 counts and assessing viral load.

Training Faculty

The faculty includes both National and International experts with

extensive experience in managing HIV infected patients and conducting

research related to HIV/AIDS.

Certificate

A certificate of participation will be awarded to all candidates at the end of

the course.

Eligibility

Medical graduates & post-graduates from any specialty (Diploma & MD) are

eligible to apply. The course can accommodate only 30 candidates. These

candidates will be selected on merit. All candidates are expected to complete an

application form. The deadline to submit application forms is January 15th 2007.

The selection committee will carefully screen applicants and successful

candidates will be notified. Upon selection,candidates are expected to register

and pay the course fee.

Clinical Course in HIV Medicine: (15 students)

The clinical course includes taking rounds, attending out-patient

clinics, laboratory work in addition to lectures and case discussions.

Only post-graduates (Diploma & MD) from any specialty will be eligible

to apply. Only 15 candidates will be selected on merit.

All candidates are expected to send application form on plain paper.

After scrutiny of the forms, by the selection committee, successful

candidates will be informed about selection. Upon selection, candidates are

expected to register and pay the course fee.

About CHART

USF-India Center for health, HIV/AIDS Research and Training

(CHART-India) is an academic community partnership between the

University of South Florida (USF) and 10 major partners in India. These partners

include public and private healthcare providers, not-for-profit community-based

urban and rural organizations, teaching hospitals and state universities.

CHART-India began as collaboration between USF's Division of Infectioous

Diseases and International Medicine and the Department of Global Health in

response to a growing HIV/AIDS epidemic and to straighten the capacity among

Indian caregivers to manage the disease.
