I, also am wondering what causes the clotting. This month I didn't have it very

bad, only a few. Some months there are so many! Sometimes, too, the flow will

vengeance! It's like a clot will stop the flow and then will break loose. Has

anyone else had this problem?

Yes. It is almost as though the clots act as a sort of " dam " , stopping the

flow. When the clot is released, watch out . .

Hi. I was having a very similar experience with clotting every month before

my UFE. The clots got progressively bigger and more numerous as my fibroids

grew and the symptoms worsened over a 3 year period. Like you, my period

would often start, then stop, then I would pass a mass of clots usually

after hours of very painful cramps, and then the gushing would start. The

excessive bleeding and anemia were probably the most dangerous aspect of my

fibroids healthwise, but I can say without hesitation the worst part of the

ordeal for me was the clotting and cramps. I've never had kids but I think

this was probably as close to labour pain as you can get. It was as though

I could feel my uterus convulsing trying to push this stuff out and it was

excrutiating as they were expelled, given their size, especially in the last

year before my UFE. It was always a relief to pass the clots since it

relieved the cramps, but the process was brutal. I really sympathize with

you!

I totally agree. This is how it is for me. After the clots pass, I often

think to myself this must have been how I felt when I was in my teens!

After the clots have passed, I feel cleansed inside and totally free of

pain. I wish the feeling would last, though.

I don't have the major pain with the clots (although I always take a fair amount

of advil during that time, so I might be masking some of the pain), but I have

the same problem. Period stops dead for, sometimes up to 24 hours, then the

flood gates open again. I noticed this about 6 months ago, without the passing

of clots. In the past 2 months, though, it comes with clots. You are

definately not alone on this!

This week-end for me was horrible. I had to cancel a nice week-end in Las

Vegas because of my heavy period. I also had horrible cramps and since I

never had any children either I imagine that this pain must be like the pain

of giving birth. After the pain I passed clots too. A doctor once told me

to face reality. That my uterous was to produce friboids while others were

to hold babies. Pretty sad, ha?

I also suffered from the heavy clotting that women here are talking about. I

had a UAE back in 1998, I think it was, back when it was just being introduced

on the East Coast. For me, it's been a great success, although I first had to

go through an episode with a degenerating fibroids which I " delivered " a few

months following my UAE.

I had done some research on what causes clotting; hope I am remembering this

accurately. When we get our periods, the lining of the uterus is being shed. To

help this occur, our bodies produce a substance in the blood that causes it NOT

to clot, so that the blood can flow freely from the uterus. However, in cases

of heavy bleeding as is so often found in those of us blessed with fibroids,

especially submucosal fibroids, the amount of blood being released is more than

the amount of the anti-clotting substance can handle. Hence, we start producing

clots in our menstrual flow.

Hi,

Just wanted to let you know I also went through this. When it got

bad the clots would come at any time of the month, very big and

bright red.

I have had two myomectomies. After the myo the clots and pain would

stop, the bleeding would be a bit heavy but normal. Very, very

manageable after what I'd been through.

Ditto on the cramping and backache.

I just realized that this last period lasted 10 days or more and I have

cramps immediately after the period now, too. That's new.

I usually welcomed the end of my period because the cramping and " stuffed

up " feeling left. Not anymore it seems.

Does anyone know if these clots can get out of the uterus into other parts

of the body?

Also, what is a submucosal fibroid?

Yes, the endometrium does build up during your period. However, don't you find

that some months are

heavier than others?

Anyway, I just had my period and I must say this was one of the lighter episodes

I have had for a

long time. Very little clotting, and heaviest day 3 went through 6 pads during

the day and 3 at

night. Now on day 6 and only spotting. Last month I had such heavy clotting and

blood loss that I

became anemic and my doctor was seriously talking hysterectomy because my

fibroid is increasing in

size ( it now measures 20 weeks vs 16 weeks last year).

I attribute my lighter than usual period to a couple of factors:

- I am seriously reducing stress by exercising 3 times a week

- have cut out buying meat at grocery store and now go to the farmers market

where get poultry & beef

without hormones

- am supplementing with natural progesterone cream (I have been using the cream

for the last 2 years

but I don't believe I was using enough to combat the heavy periods and because

of the stress I was

under, I don't believe it was doing its job of opposing the estrogen). Now I am

using 1/2 of a 2 oz

tube

- I have started using herbs and vitamins recommended in Larks book

" Fibroid tumors and

Endometriosis " .

- I have stopped drinking coffee and alcohol and not eating anything with sugar.

I will keep you posted for next month. Hope this helps to give others ideas on

what they can do to

take back control.
