Group;

I was wondering,, When does one need a cane?? I have RA and fibro..

except for the flare this morning all I have trouble with is osteo..

I have to lean my arms on the sink cause my back hurts so bad to do

dishs.. I don't mind at least I can do them.. Leaning on the sink I

have no pain afterwards..

I can't walk far.. Maybe to the kitchen and around the house for

about 3 minutes than I need to lean on the dresser or bend over and

lean on the washing machine.. Would a cane help me?? I don't know..

I don't even know why people use a cane.. I won't be imbarrassed..

I would do anything to take a walk outside.. If I went to the

mailbox and back I am in agony from my back..

I wouldnt be proud to walk with a cane and I could care less what

people thought of me using a cane if it would help me walk some.. I

just want to walk some.. I miss walking so much.. I told my husband

maybe I need a walker to walk with.. He said " Don't talk stupid

your not an invalid. " So I felt a little vain for asking..

I just want to get around thats all.. I didnt even think about a

cane till I read someone needing a cane in our group. Than again it

might not help me at all... The post I saw I can understand the

thoughts in their head about walking with a cane..

No one knows how bad it feels not to walk till they are unable

too.. I was thinking about asking my rhuemy if I need a cane.. It

might not help anyway, I don't know!! Would she think I am weird

for asking??? I do have a wheel chair so if I go someplace that

requires a lot of walking... I don't need it at walmart cause they

have those nifty scooters.. If anyone knows please explain it to

me.. thanks so much

Oh my Lori I got really excited when you said a basket and nice seat

on the walkers.. I sure could of used one the other day.. Sometimes

waiting in line at the doctors I feel like I am going to drop from

the pain in my back... I would believe it would only be temporay

because hopefully my rhuemy will get my osteo in check...

When I asked for a wheel chair I got the same reply from my primary

physician.. He said he was afraid I would get dependent on it.. I

only needed it for when we went to the mall or to the circus because

I can't stand very long before I become very uncomfortable,, after

a few minutes it gets to pure agony..

I really would like to walk some down the road.. I can't make it to

the corner and back with out severe pain.. I had to lean up against

a tree.. I didnt think I could make it the rest of the way home..

It's about 5 houses side by side to the corner..

Gentle hugs

and Podiatrist about a cane/walker and they both said that they

didn't want me to use one because you become dependent on them. I

would ask your doctor's. You have a different situation than be

because you have osteoarthtritis, so I'd ask them. They do have

really nice walkers out now that have a basket on them and also a

seat that you can use when you have to stand for a long time (like

waiting in line). That's what I would've gotten, LOL! But now I

can walk alright, much better now that I'm on the Humira. I think

that people use a cane when they have a weakness on one side of

their body and a walker is used when people are weak on both sides

of the body. My sister had to use one when she had a couple of

disks blow in her back, which caused nerve damage. After she got

out of the wheelchair, she then progressed to a walker and then to

the cane. One of her legs had more damage than the other and she

had to use it for quite a period of time before she was weaned off

of it.
