Guest guest
Kathy, Stomach pains are on the list. Yours sounds very painful and extreme. Some of the others are hair loss, nausea, diahrea, mouth sores, fatigue and many more. I never had any extreme side effects. If I had pains like someone stabbing me, I would call my rheummy. I hope you get to feeling better. Guest guest
Hi Kathy: I couldn't take the MTX pills as they made me so deathly sick, with awful pains, etc. I switched and take a weekly injection of MTX. Just get a little nausea and then I am fine. I also take 2 Prilosec a day. I hope you feel better soon. No fun feeling that bad every day. Wishing you pain free days. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, Methotrexate is a bad - bad - drug. A drug that 3 Rheumatologists have tried to put me on, and call me stubborn, but I would rather have the pain of RA than the side effects of methotrexate. I must admit, I did try it twice, but the stomach pain that it caused was not worth it. My body said no to it, and I agreed, and I am so glad I did. I can not believe that any doctor would put a person on methotrexate and as an RA survivor, I would say STOP, find any alternative. Methotrexate is a cancer drug. A Chemo Drug. It can cause liver damage, lung damage, kidney damage. It can decrease the number of blood cells made by your bone marrow. I can damage your intenstines, cause stomach ulcers, cause severe rashes, and increase the risk of lymphoma. You said your stomach feels like someone is stabbing you. Listen to YOUR BODY. Not your Doctor. My doctor(s) have not liked me much. I have had severe RA for 17+ years and I am still here, and have been under a doctor's care for less than 5 of those years because I have refused to take many, if not most of the drugs prescribed. I have my own beliefs when it comes to RA and in no way want to force my opinion on any of you, but I feel your pain on a daily basis and want you all to know that doctors aren't always right. I would love to find a Rheumatologist who has RA and would actually ingest the drugs they prescribe on a daily basis. Until that time, I am going to listen to MY BODY. Thank you for your time, --- In , " k_stepnitz " <stepnitzcandles@...> wrote: > > I been on the pill form for about 9 weeks now. > I had some stomach problems, but I have been on an increased amount > My stomach feels like someone is stabbing me > What are some of the other side effects of methotrexate > Kathy > Michigan >

Guest guest
Kathy, What you say is true. But on the other hand some do well with methotrexate. Don't forget that RA causes all of the things you mentioned too. RA causes pulmonary fibrosis just like mtx. RA causes Felty Syndrome and pericarditis. The only 2 people I knew with RA died of those two complications. If I didn't take bad, bad drugs I'd be in a nursing home flat on my back. Personally, I'm glad for the bad drugs, they aren't perfect but at least I can do my ADLs. Also, don't forget that you may not see the vascular effects of RA but the lining of blood vessels take a beating too. > > > > I been on the pill form for about 9 weeks now. > > I had some stomach problems, but I have been on an increased amount > > My stomach feels like someone is stabbing me > > What are some of the other side effects of methotrexate > > Kathy > > Michigan > > > > > > >

Guest guest
Group, I know that MTX has slowed down the progression of my RA. I hate to think how it would be now had I not taken it. MTX isn't for everyone and I have had mild side effects but what I have experienced if worth the good that it has done. It has not put me into remission but I have no regrets for the time spent taking it. There is no cure for RA, but disease modifying drugs are a real blessing that I am thankful for. I have a responsiblity in taking any of these drugs also. Get my bloodwork done and report any negative effects that I can not tolerate. I have taken antibiotics that made me sicker than the illness they were to cure. All drugs are not for everyone. Sometimes the only way to know is to try them. Guest guest
Savannahhipchick, Thank you for presenting the opposing positive perspective on this. Being newly diagnosed and on MTX now for just going on a month, and trying to get some normalcy back into my life, the post by Kathy, while well meaning, certainly didn't help me. It only added further confusion. I cannot live on the levels of Prednisone I'm currently on and having trouble with any reduction. Like a lot of things in life, you have to balance the risks with the rewards and if that means living with some risks from taking MTX, then I'll take MTX. It's my choice and because of forums like this, a well informed choice.
