Guest guest
Excessive, unexplained weight loss could be a symptom of thyroid problems, a family member of mine has had this from hyperthyroid conditions, which also can be autoimmune disease. If your doctors have not checked out this possibility, you should ask to have your thyroid checked, especially if you are having other symptoms like a feeling of your heart pounding or racing, or dizziness. It can also result from bowel inflammation. My weight went down to 90 lbs when my IBS was at it's worst. I am sure there are other possibilities as well. Please bug your doctors until they find the cause and an effective treatment. The end results of some of these conditions are not pretty if they are just allowed to go on untreated. I lost a lot of weight at times in my life, and got so weak and tired from it, and I can't tell you how many times I was brushed off with a " cute " comment like, " Oh, so many of my female patients would love to have this problem, ha, ha!, eat lots of milkshakes and snacks. " before I found out how serious it could be. I am not a litigious person, generally, but any doctor that would dare to say that to me now without at least running some tests would be in for a big malpractice suit! I hope you will both feel better soon! Don't let them brush it off with just diet suggestions! Sincerely, Liz G
Guest guest
So do I. Right now I'm on a very strict diet of salad and fish or chicken. No bread, only 2 fruits per day and no sweets. I'm having to do this because of my triglycerides/cholesterol are really high. I had another blood test after being on this diet for 4 weeks and my trig are down considerable, confirming that it was my diet and not a physical thing. However, I've lost 20 pounds and I'm really glad because my daughter is getting married in September and I don't mind having pictures made now. Guest guest
From: M Carroll <LCARROLL@...> Hello all, Have any of you experienced weight loss while on the antibioitics? For the umpteenth time over the past few months I have heard that I was too tiny ( this time it was from my denttist) and I need to gain weight. I cannot gain while on the antibioitics for some reason. I have lost almost all of my muscle tone since doxi as I have been so sore and literally useless except to work. I do stay very active and busy at work so I figure it may be revving up the metabolism. My arms are soooooo skinny and the area above my wrist and below the elbow has no fat or muscle which I guess really leaves a bad impression when someone sees me. I look anorexic. I am eating as much as I can anything I can but still stay small. Does anyone have any suggestions on gaining weight or how to build up muscle? I can't walk or work out with weights or bike because of my knees and sore feet. Thanks so much! C
Guest guest
My thighs got really skinny and so did my forearms this past Spring and Summer. Dr. Brown talks about that in his book. When the inflammation is raging, then the collagen supporting the muscle cells is weakened. The muscle fibers aren't affected, so that once the inflammation is brought under control, the muscle strength returns. Only if these inflammatory toxins are arrested does the collagen have a chance to regenerate. The muscle fibers automatically fill out because a lot of the thinness is due to the loss of connective tissue. Ra is a problem of the connective tissues, thus the reason for your problem and my problem this past Spring and summer. Fortunately, now that my inflammation has subsided, I am regaining strength. You'll be able to tell very quickly. When I was really inflamed, my legs were so weak, I couldn't even stand up from a chair without pulling on things. So the key is to control the inflammation. How? Well, good question. Perhaps microdose Prednisone? Different Nsaid? Change your dosage level of minocycline? Take some small doses of metho? That's where your doctor needs to help you. It seems that different things work for different folks. Guest guest
Hi : You asked if anyone had experienced weight loss while on the antibiotics. At 6 ft. and 160 pounds, I was slightly underweight 6 months ago when I developed RA. After about a month of the onset of the RA, my weight had dropped to 147. This happened while I was eating at least half again as much food as normal. I am now eating even more with the result that I stopped losing weight, but can't seem to increase. I realize the hydrocortisone (Cortef) is responsible for the enormous appetite, but I wonder if it is the cause of the weight loss. One of my doctors said no, and attributed the weight loss to the complete elimination of sugar in any form from my diet. It seems like I read somewhere that the weight loss is caused by the disease itself, and the weight would return after the RA is in remission. An unexplained weight loss is often a signal that cancer is present somewhere. Two of my doctors said no when I asked. So, at this point I have no idea what the real reason is. Maybe someone in the group has been down this road. Harry Hi : You asked if anyone had experienced weight loss while on the antibiotics. Guest guest
Hi , I started losing weight about the time I started having symptoms of RA. I have never been overweight and losing just 12 lbs over the last 8 months has made a big difference. That was one of the things that concerned my husband the most before we knew what this was. I find it very hard to eat more than small amounts at a time so I eat probably 6 times a day to get enough food. I have stabalized but haven't been able to gain any of my weight back. I seem to have lost all desire for sweets so thats no help. So while it looks like I'm constantly eating its small amounts every few hours just to keep up. I think my joints sticking out makes it look worse especially at my wrists and ankles. I am trying to develop a menu that isnt just fattening but will help retain what muscle I have since like you, other than work I don't have the energy or pain threshold to exercise much. Some would say that too thin isn't a bad problem to have but personally I'm sick of being frail. I haven't heard of your protein diet, maybe you could let me know what that is. Best of luck to you. Guest guest
If you smoke, quit, you will gain weight. I have always been skinny too skinny. I quit smoking 1 1/2 years ago and I am 15 pounds heavyer now then I was. I was 105 and now I'm 120. Almost too much when your 5'2 and small framed. I don't eat anymore now then I used too. I have been on the AP for about a year and it doesn't seem to effect my weight. As far as muscle tone, just basic yoga stretches can build your muscle tone back up. If you don't use it you lose it. Good Luck. Diane
Guest guest
Group, I am one of the ones with a very big weight loss and having trouble putting it back on. My doctor says it is probably a result of malabsorption which can be caused by having an acidic system. We must keep our PH balanced in order to keep or gain weight. I am waiting for a test of some kind for malabsorption to see if she is right or not. Apparently we need to make sure that our mineral intake is adequate, also. Guest guest
Those of you in this group experiencing unexplained weight loss need to check first for candida and leaky gut. The usual stool test for candida can miss it by a country mile. If you have leaky gut, you should take digestive enzymes with your meals. I recommend them even if you don't have a problem. My favorite is Super Enzyme Caps by Twin Labs. It also has the necessary betaine hydrochloride so many of us are low in. Ethel Dr. Weg and Dr. find candida in every patient that comes for this therapy. Dr. treats it concurrently with the AP while Dr. Weg tends to treat the candida first. Another probable cause of weight loss is parasites or other organisms. 410@... wrote: > > Hi : > You asked if anyone had experienced weight loss while on the antibiotics. > > At 6 ft. and 160 pounds, I was slightly underweight 6 months ago when I > developed RA. Guest guest
I have been told that a lack of stomach acid can cause malabsorption of minerals. I believe digestive enzymes can help if this is, in fact, the problem. Guest guest
Hi, and group, I get a little worried when we diagnose our own weight loss, especially if it's a new situation. Weight loss definitely accompanies the systemic inflammatory diseases, but if it seems to be a result of the treatment for the disease, I think something is amiss. I think any time you are losing weight and can't reverse it on your own, you need to talk to your doctor. It could be an indication of hypothyroidism or diabetes, or some other situation which should be treated. I have had trouble maintaining my weight while having arthritis, but have actually gained 5 pounds in the 2 months I have been on antibiotics (I needed to). I have had a devil of a time rebuilding my muscle strength, and know that the weight loss was largely muscle loss. I believe most of my problem was due to a combination of joint inflammation and gut irritation or inflammation from the old NSAIDs. But I did not accept these explanations until I had some of the other most obvious possibilities ruled out. I would urge anyone who has had a new weight loss to at least discuss it with their doctors. Loss of muscle mass is a big problem with the rheumatic diseases, and if that is the cause, research has shown that a carefully designed exercise program can help to regain some of the loss, and prevent further disability. I know not everyone is able to get physical therapy because of the horrible health insurance situation we have in the US, but if you have access to it, it is an important adjunct treatment. I pay for my own, because it is cheaper than losing my ability to work. Guest guest
Sally Fallon and Enig have a book called " Eat Fat, Lose Fat " that is on weight management/loss from a WAPF/NT perspective. It is similar to Atkins, just with lots of fat, especially coconut oil, but definitely aims at carb, especially grain carb and sugar, reduction. Guest guest
Hi , I belong to a really friendly group called lowcarbhighfat I wasn't that comfortable on Atkins either but once I understood that fat was the missing link, I mean 70-80% daily (per Fitday.com) that I could really grasp how a low carb diet works and why it works. Anyway, I've lost 17 pounds since mid December. The group has plenty of people who are doing the Eat Fat Lose Fat approach and plenty of talk and understanding about things like raw milk, coconut oil, kefir, bone broth, butter, eating raw and etc Obviously we are not afraid of saturated fat. As far as recipes go, if you don't have a copy of Nourishing Traditions, there are plenty of recipes there that are not complicated at all. Once you have the ingredients and do say one or two jars of lacto fermented vegetables a week it's really not too hard. My favorite recipe for a quick easy meal, eggs fried in butter with melted cheese, just vary the cheese to make something different or put in chopped up onions, peppers, mushrooms sauted in butter of course ;o), you know for a weekend meal. Colpo has a book out, _The Fat Loss Bible_ that I have not read but to which some others in our circle have given props. You could put some focus on building lean muscle. The more you exercise, the more carbs you can eat. Also, consider trying the basic rules of _Mastering Leptin_, which have helped some folks (but were disastrous for one person with severe blood sugar/adrenal problems): -- Go 5-6 hours between the end of one meal and the beginning of another. Eat two or three meals per day with no snacks. -- Go 11-13 hours between dinner and breakfast. -- Eat protein and fat with every meal. -- Exercise regularly, and wait at least three hours after finishing your last meal before exercising. Do not eat after exercising until you feel hungry. (If you feel hungry right away, it is ok to eat right away). Chris
Guest guest
, You've hit the nail on the head regarding how our society got into the physical shape we are in - the need for convenience! Our health and our waist line have been the price we pay for convenience and our busy lifestyles. Some things that I have found beneficial are to eat plenty of healthy fats. Fat satisfies the appetite. I try to eat EV coconut oil as much as I can. I LOVE the stuff! The key is to not eat fat outside your home. For example, I have fresh, raw cream in my coffee at home. But, if I go to starbucks, I get no fat, no whip. I don't need THAT fat, I need the healthy stuff. I try to limit breads, even when I can get bread made from sprouted grains. I know many people that have lost A LOT of weight eliminating breads and sugar. Try to eat lots of fresh, organic veggies and fruits. I picked up my organic veggie and fruit coop order last Saturday and spent the most of the rest of the day washing the veggies and putting them in the frig. It was a chore, but then I only had to pull it out of the fridge for the rest of the week. Kathy Weight Loss Hi-I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction towards learning about Weight Loss through a traditional diet. I had lost 35 pounds doing the Atkins diet but I hated it and don't want to do it again. While I like meat/chicken/fish as much as anyone I dont want to eat it 24/7. Also I'm a single parent and don't have time to prep a lot of the foods in Nourishing Traditions, is there somewhere I can learn about easy to prepare meals that aren't so time consuming? Thanks for your help, acewex@...
Guest guest
This is interesting, and I've seen it elsewhere: -- Go 11-13 hours between dinner and breakfast. What is the rationale behind this? Like many of my other newly developed eating habits, it flies in the face of conventional wisdom. The other source that I saw it from said to drink a quart of water before you eat anything. Something else that I would add to Chris' list is to not eat 3 hours before bed time. The Chinese believe that whatever you eat 3 hours before bedtime, your body keeps. If I MUST eat, I try to drink a glass of milk, or preferably kefir, or eat a piece of fruit. Guest guest
For me personally, it's easier to fast to lose weight for a number of reasons. Most importantly to me, I think I tend to overeat carbs especially in holiday situations and then continue " splurging " on junk food afterward. I know I'm sensitive to MSG and I wonder if it is addictive to me. I have a lot of trouble just cutting back on it, or cutting it completely out of my diet once I've fallen off the wagon. When that happens, it seems inevitable that I start to get insulin resistance in my cells as well, so I start that eating because I feel hungry even though I haven't used up the calories I've already eaten. I tried the Eat Fat/Lose Fat thing and really the coconut oil had no appeal to me, I couldn't remember to eat it throughout the day, especially days on the run from here to there with the kids. When I fast (this is my second time), I find it easy to stay away from the temptations of junk food, fast food and any other kind of food. It's easier to give stuff up cold turkey than moderate how much I eat. I can do a raw food fast - just eating raw food, a juice fast, a Master Cleanse fast, doesn't matter - I have no problem resisting temptation. At the end of the fast, the insulin resistance is gone, the MSG addiction has been broken, I've gained control of the blood sugar spiral thing, and I have a lot more resistance to tempting junk foods. My friend who tried fasting noticed the same thing. You lose a ton of weight and it does stay off. I fasted last July and lost somewhere around 9 lb and it took massive binging at Christmas to gain it back. I've just lost that 9 lb again, and only in a week. I've read that if you fast for a period of a week or two then do a raw food diet afterward you'll actually lose weight faster during the raw food part. In my raw food parts I also drink bone broth and raw milk and eat raw cheese, so it's not really against WAP. I feel a part of the weight problem in the US is MSG addiction, and another part is just that we eat more calories than we burn because the food has so many more calories than our bodies were designed for. I've got too many distractions here to continue but hopefully I've got the gist of it out. > > , > > You've hit the nail on the head regarding how our society got into the > physical shape we are in - the need for convenience! Guest guest
you could follow the Fast 5 Diet and eat traditional foods during your 5 hour window. http://www.fast-5.com/ there is also a group for this and many eat low carb and trad. foods. This way of eating saves lots of cooking and prep time since you are eating fewer meals. p. 621 of NT contains limited-time limited budget ideas. > > Hi-I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction > towards learning about Weight Loss through a traditional diet. Inasmuch as this will profoundly dilute your gastric juices, it's really not a good idea. -
