I use a forearm crutch. I was using a cane, but it hurt my wrist and

shoulder. Someone on this board actually suggested the forearm

crutch, bless who ever it was! It's so much easier to use, and works

so much better than a cane. I still have a couple of really pretty

canes to use for the rare dress-up events. I'm so afraid of falling

that I use the cane or crutch even when I think I could manage without

it.

My mother resisted using any mobility aid, first the cane, then the

walker, then a wheelchair. Once she got talked into them, it was " why

didn't I do this sooner? " It was so hard to take her places when she

couldn't get around. There were so many places we wanted to show her

that we never were able to see. I swore I would never do that, I

would do whatever it takes to get out there and enjoy life. We're

going to the State Fair with my son and his family later this month,

and I plan to rent a wheelchair. Same thing when we eventually get to

Disneyland. There's no way I can walk that much, but I'm not going to

miss the fun! If one of my babies gets tired, then they can sit in my

lap. It's amazing how the little ones understand that there are

things that Grandma can't do, and they run to get my crutch for me

when we go out.

oh, BTW, I am 59 now and have been using a cane/crutch for about 5 years now.

oh, yes, she's right! You use the cane on the opposite side of the

weak joint. Yes, there's more to using a cane than you might think, I

know I never realized that. My PT spent most of a session on it. You

also have to get the height right. Here's what the Mayo Clinic has on

their web site about using a cane:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/canes/HA00064

Good luck, hope that site explains it for you.

Hello everyone,

I have only been with the group a short while and I hope I am sending the reply

correctly.  I wasn't sure if I reply to group or reply via web post.  Help!!

Walking aids....I have used a little bit of everything in the past.  Thank God

at this time I don't need anything.  The fake knees really help in that dept!

As far as not being able to use a walker or a cane because of the pain in wrists

and hands...I had a walker with a special platform on the handle.  My right

wrist fused on its own ages ago and this platform allowed me to lay my forearm

on it and grasp a sort of handle at the end, rather than baring down on the

walker handle.  Not sure if you can picture what I mean, but it's worth asking

about.

Getting your head around it ...hmmm...as Nike says " Just do it! "   My life has

been hard...who would have ever thought there would come a day when I thought

the RA was way low on my list of problems?   I'll have to fill you all in

sometime.  Anyway...the way I see it is this...the people that you encounter

when you go out to the mall etc. are mostly people you will never see again in

your lifetime.  They are certainly not going to be there the next day feeling

pain with you if you didn't use an aid when you needed to.  So why try to look

good for them?  Your loved ones that you are around certainly would never want

you to be hurting, so they would want you to use anything that was a help to

you.  And you....think about joint protection.  Think about saving some of the

weight that the affected joints have to bear.  Do it for you.

Hugs,

Beth in MD
