I did try controlling my diseases with diet. I found no effects either good or

bad.

The more I read up on this stuff, the better it sounds. Yes, it might be a

difficult diet to keep, but its got to be worth it if it means less toxic meds,

less pain, less damage to the body etc. I'm curious if anyone else here has

tried controlling their disease and / or symptoms with diet.

I took a sample excerpt from the following URL:

http://www.thorne.com/media/Rheumatoid Arthritis.pdf

In another trial, 46 patients with RA consumed a diet rich in raw foods and

containing no cereals or dairy products for periods of 1-3 years. Thirty-six

patients (78%) showed significant improvements in joint pain and swelling,

morning stiffness, sedimentation rate, and other parameters. Of the 36

responders, 19 were in complete remission for 1-5

years. Among those who responded to the diet, improvements were seen by the end

of the third month in approximately 90 percent of cases. Improvement typically

was progressive and often occurred rapidly. Seven responders who abandoned the

diet relapsed, but improved again after resuming the diet.

hi linda

i went to a facility where they make raw vegan food and stayed there 3

weeks. i didn't need any meds by the end of it. however i lost way to

much weight - went down to 90 lobs at 5'5 " and the diet i found to be

not sustainable over the long term due to this. i also found i needed

some animal products. i do however find the paleo diet very helpful. see:

http://www.thepaleodiet.com/index.shtml

http://www.thepaleodiet.com/articles/Arthritis%20PDF.pdf

also if you can follow this diet plan it is even more helpful but very

strict so hard to follow. robert mcferran had severe RA and no meds

worked for him. he manages it with this plan:

I don't know how much diet can control RA.  Diet can control inflammation that

is caused by food, not necessarily RA.  If you are sensitive to wheat and you

eat wheat...you will swell.  If you no longer eat wheat the swelling goes down.

I have tried these anti-inflammatory diets, and for long enough to notice a

difference...and I didn't.  I have tried natural medicines, I have tried

conventional medicines...none really work all that well in controlling RA.

For 13 years I have had RA, and just got two new knees last month.  There is

just no rhyme nor reason to this disease.  You just hav to do the best with what

you can.

hi shandhi

what diets did you try? i think i have tried everyone but the paleo diet

really helps me. i eat no grains, no cooked starches like potatoes or

yams, no legumes, no dairy, nothing processed, nothing sweet except

fruit and sometimes a little honey, no alcohol, no caffeine. i only eat

meat, fish, vegs, fruit, nuts/seeds, and healthy fats - olive oil, flax

oil, coc oil, butter. on this diet i need no cortisone and no

painkillers. see this article:

http://www.thepaleodiet.com/articles/Arthritis%20PDF.pdf

i've read that there is no archeol. evidence of arthritis i skeletal

remains from pre-agricultural days. interesting as grains give me soo

much pain.

a man named ray audette had RA and diabetes and both went away after

adopting this diet. he wrote a book called neanderthin. robert mcferran

did an even stricter version which works even better for me but i find

it too strict to stick to for long:

http://www.frot.co.nz/dietnet/reviews/mcferran01.htm

i also know a woman on 10 mg mtx who stays in complete remission with

only this med IF she stays on this diet. if she goes off pain and

swelling are awful. i've met others who this has helped enormously.

worth a try right?

hope this helps someone
