Guest guest
Hi everyone, I was interested to hear about how many people use walking aids and what sort do they use? I have a walking stick but I am very stubborn to use it, even when I am really stuggling. I know it is stupid of me and that one day I may have a nasty fall. I have already falling down our back steps a few times!! I do use it around the house when I need to, but I havent venutured outside with it yet. I don't go out that much but when I do I feel like taking off with other peoples aids!!!!! I find I am worse off in the morning and by late afternoon I am moving a bit better, but then when bed time comes I am really stuggling again and in so much pain. I am 47years old and I know there are a lot of much younger people out there with RA./FM. I would love to hear of anyone's imput on walking aids and if they do use them, how did they get there heads around it? take care
Guest guest
Hi , I use a cane as well as a wheelchair for BIG OUTINGS where there is a lot of waiting in line (like a concert my kids want to go to) or trips to the mall, otherwise, I cannot make it through one store let alone the whole mall, lol. I was sooo embarrassed at first. My kids helped by pushing me in my chair and encouraging me to use my cane. They say it is cool looking, lol. They are good kids. What really helped me get my head around it as you say is that a dear friend of the family who has had RA for about 12 years fell down three years ago and broke his arm/shoulder. Well, the man has not been the same since. He has not been able to drive in three years, they have done three surgeries on it, but because of the RA and the detioration, they have not had a lot to work with. I think to myself, well maybe if he had been using a cane he could have prevented that fall and do I want to end up thinking that about myself? NO WAY! I will tell you he can no longer sleep in a bed, had to move to an apartment because he could not keep up his house anymore as his wife is ill as well and has bed sores from sitting so much. this is a man who never stopped, never let the disease show or get him down, but one fall did all this to him. SO, that really helps me realize that we need to be very careful with our bones, they are precious and very fragile. Who cares what people think? All that matters is what your immediate family (husband and children if they are still home) think and then sometimes if they are jerks about it (my family is great), all that matters is that you are safe and mobile for as long as possible. I hope this helps. Tracie from Maine
Guest guest
OMG, Thank you for sharing this story. I know I'm going to be difficult when it comes to this issue. Hopefully, it won't happen for a long, long time. I think I'll remember this story (maybe not where it came from) and put my stubborness to rest. --- In , Tracie Bragdon <tracierae143@...> wrote: > > Hi , > > I use a cane as well as a wheelchair for BIG OUTINGS where there is a lot of waiting in line (like a concert my kids want to go to) or trips to the mall, otherwise, I cannot make it through one store let alone the whole mall, lol.
