Shands Hospital in Gainesville Florida is going to start trial studies using

Ultrasound/MRI to shrink fibroids. I sent them an email asking if I could

be part of the study.....I am to check back with them in 1 month. I will

let everyone know what I find out. Heck, at this point I will PAY THEM!!!!!

Focused Ultrasound (for Dee)

Hi Dee,

You asked about focused ultrasound in a response to a posting earlier

this week. It is an experimental treatment for fibroids using MRI to

locate the fibroids and focused ultrasound to heat up the fibroids

which " cooks them to death " without injuring healthy tissue. It does

not involve surgery, genreal anesthesia, or a hospital stay. Check

out these sites for information:

http://www.insightec.com/fr_load.html?32uterine_fibroids.html

www.medserv.dk/print.php?sid=1275

All I know about this procedure is what I read on these sites. I

WISH I KNEW MORE! I am trying to get some information from the US

site for the InSightec study. If anyone knows anything else about

focused ultrasound PLEASE post.

I have symptomatic fibroids and I am having a difficult time deciding

between " suffer, watch the fibroids grow, and wait for a better

procedure to become available " and " choose from what's currently

available. " If fertility was not an issue for me it would be an

easier decision. I just keep hoping that another less risky

procedure will become available.

Thanks, Krystyn! I had never heard of this procedure,

and now I know a LOT more. I well understand your

predicament in whether to wait or try something that's

currently available. It took many months for me to come

to a difficult decision. Best of luck in treating your own

problem fibroids!!

While I didn't receive fibroid treatment at Shands, I

did take physical therapy there for a back injury. In

general, I think it's a very well-respected hospital. My

obgyn in Gainesville did her residency there, and she

was an excellent physician. But I can't speak to the

specifics of the study or the individual practitioners

conducting it. Please keep us posted on the study and

if you are a participant!
