I can't speak for , but my doc did the same thing.  I saw 3 rheumatologists

for consultations when I first got sick.  2 out of the 3 of them recommended

Enbrel, so that's where I went, and haven't looked back.  I couldn't take mtx

b/c I was trying to get pregnant, and I think I was too sick to wait for P'nil

to start working.  The third rheum had recommended sulfasalazine, but the other

2 said I was too sick for that.  The Enbrel started within a week and I felt

tons better.  Sometimes I think it's a health insurance thing, some plans make

you fail a DMARD before moving to a biologic.  Luckily my rheum was able to send

a memo to my insurance company saying I needed Enbrel asap.  Kate F

hi katie

i am wondering why your doc went straight to a biologic without trying

plaquenil or mtx 1st?

thanks

Hi!

I was recently diagnosed and as of yesterday had my second Enbrel

(sure-click) shot! In two weeks I have had more energy and less pain. I

suggest talking to your doctor and see if it would help for you. I am

30 and very active. At first the thought of giving myself a shot scared

me. I only have to do it once a week and it is literally 15 seconds for

a pain-less week!

Hi ,

My doctor didn't want me to go on mtx because of my age. Being 30 and without

children yet he didn't want me to start mtx. I am a third generation RA woman in

my family and my numbers were really high.  Enbrel was the best option to get my

flares under control.  I have also been on Prednisone because I responded so

well to it.  I will be off the Prednisone in two more weeks!  Thank goodness!!

Take care,

Some insurance companies, like mine for instance, require you to fail

on two other DMARDs before approving you for a biologic. Still, they

took a month of delaying before they approved me.

That's right, Diane. The disease itself increases one's risk. What

added risk, if any, that DMARDs contribute is still being debated.

Whatever the cause, the overall risk of cancer is small.
