Hi LL,

Thanks for writing. 5mg of Prednisone is a relatively low dose of

prednisone. How has your wife been doing on it? Has she had any of the side

effects

you described? Is it helping her? Many people get put on higher doses and

that's when those side effects might come into play. Everyone is different.

But if she's doing ok at 5mg, and has been on it that long with no side

effects, then perhaps you both should express your concerns to the Dr. and

maybe

she can decrease to 2.5 if she and the Dr. feel it's OK to do so.

You don't mention how she's been doing since her DX and being put on her

medications. Hope this is helpful to you and I hope she is feeling better.

hi,

i just wanted to say that 5mg is a very low dose that shouldn't cause too

many side effects if at all, at least it didn't for me when i was taking it (was

on it for 1 yr and it did wonders) actually its the only thing that ever

worked for me period .. my new RA decided to put me back on it b/c nothing else

that we've tried is working and i couldn't be more happy ..

good luck to your wife, hope everything goes smooth

Hi, LL.

Prednisone is not an evil drug. It's a very powerful

anti-inflammatory. It's very useful in controlling RA, especially in

early RA or for disease flares.

Not everyone will experience serious side effects, especially if

prednisone is used for a short time at low doses.

Generally speaking, 5 mg is considered to be a low dose. This is

fairly arbitrary though, since not all people are the same weight.

Your wife hasn't been on it very long, but I would ask about when she

can begin to discontinue her prednisone.

Is her disease under good control now?

I am on 5mg of Prednisone, and have been for over 13 years.  As far as

prednisone goes, it is a low dose.  Some people need upwards of 50mg to feel

anything.  With me, I have not noticed any physical or psychiatric issues if I

stay at that dose.  I do not get sick more often, my skin and physical

appearance is not changed.  However, if I have a flare and double the dose I get

some serious insomnia and get antsy.  It almost feels like I want to jump out of

my skin.

But is it evil?  I don't know.  If I forget to take it I feel horrible the next

morning from the pain.  Since I don't suffer from side effects at this level I

LOVE prednisone.  But, with it being the type of drug that it is, it has

potential to be very dangerous if not taken correctly, and not followed

appropriately.

Thank you for your info.  I was just put on 5mg prednisone. I am quite scared of

it.

I have taken higher doses during flares and although I felt great, gained huge

amounts of weight.. the choice now seems to be prenisone or a wheel chair.  In 5

days I will try cutting down to 2.5mg  daily.  I appreciate knowing you can take

low dose for long periods without the side effects.

Decades ago, before fertility drugs....prednisone was given to help fertility

and ovulation. It seems to be an amazing drug.

Hi LL and welcome to our group. I don't think I seen you post

before. I see that our Moderator explained to you that prednisone is

not an evil medicine. We also need to take it as our doctor

prescribes it. What makes it bad is when people abuse it.

I hope that you enjoy the group and get to know us all.

Hi LL - I don't consider 5mg per day of Prednisone a high dose. I also

wouldn't consider it " evil " as the benefits certainly have outweighed

the risks for me. There are certainly side effects to this medication

- as with most others - but one really has to weigh their options.

Personally, I think if the 5mg per day is helping your wife to live a

relatively pain free existence, then it is doing its job. My

sister-in-law has taken 5mg per day for years without any serious side

effects. Currently I take 10mg per day and hope to wean down some in a

bit.

It seems like your wife's Rheumy is taking a very active approach to

her RA. Her meds are very similar to a lot of others. Best wishes to

you both.........Doreen :)

Wow uhhhhhhhhhhhhh 50 mgs of prednisone. I got about 80 mg for an

alergic reaction. I had to get a lower dose every week for about a

month. I felt like I could do anything haaaaaaaaaaa. I swelled up

like a hot air balloon. I got so hungry I made trips to my moms,

daughter and my house to eat. Never did find out what I was

allergic to but I had to get everything for hyperallergenic to use.

Raniolo and everyone;

When someone talks about prednisone I have to say someting. When I

first came on here someone said we have a love hate relationship with

prednisone. I forgot that prednisone was what they gave me for my

allergic reaction many years ago. I wanted to find out what they

meant about love hate/hate relationship.

Indeed I got to take some for a month while waiting approval for

humira. It all came back to me. The swelling, the hunger, the

insomnia, the wonderful uforia. I know I know. Its not good for our

bones and all those unhealthy side affects with large doses. I would

love to take 10 mgs a day but my rheumy don't thinks so lol.

Hon I am sorry your so afraid of it. Sometimes I think they give us

to much information. I know we need to be informed and let us decide

for ourselves. I would love to take 5 mgs a day. Don't worry sweety

a lot of people take it in low doses. If it helps it's better than

suffering. I hope and pray everyone has pain free days.

Thank you for the kind words Clora. Today was my second day and I was able to go

out and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Saturday I was price shopping for a wheel chair. The difference on even this low

dose is incredible.  The vacation from constant pain is  so good to experience.

I did about an hour of housework today. It renewed my soul to feel useful and do

some tasks that were nagging at me.

For the time being...the heck with side effects.  We will keep dose as small as

possible.

Thank you again..

LL,

Doctors often prescribe prednisone to bridge the gap while waiting for

the other meds to take effect. They'll probably take her off of it when

the other meds kick in. No, 5mg is not considered a high dose.

I hope that your wife gets relief soon.

Please, Please be very careful with even 5 mg of prednisone! I thought that

had made a informed decision to take it, I was very wrong. I took pred for

5 years, I felt like wonder woman until I just collapsed. During that time I

had a broken foot, double break in my lower leg and then I fell and twisted

the top bone into 2 pieces and lots of bone dust. I also had cataract

surgery at age of 58! All of this is blamed on the pred, Yes I have stopped

but it

is still biting me. My upper leg has been broken for over 1 year and still

broke, I actually lost over 1/2 inch of bone and every step hurts and that is

on top of the RA pain. Please be careful.

You'd better watch what you do when you get the chair. When I finally got my

scooter I made my wife go with me to the Longview mall and I walked her legs

off. ;) It was the first time in 5 years that I could actually go out like

that. A scooter/chair is such a liberator it's indescribable. After thinking

about this experience, I made a platform she could stand on and brace on my

shoulders so both of us could ride. We even went to the county fair and lots

of other places, like motorcycle rallies in 10 states. I hope you have as

much fun as we did when we both could go out again.

Freedom is an amazing feeling.

thanks Dennis for making the feeling come alive.

The prednisone is  allowing me to walk short distances.

One day I will need a scooter but I hope to delay it as long as possible.

For now I rent them at certain venues and supermarkets.

Wishing all a pain free night...

Hi Carol - I am so sorry to hear you have had such a bad experience

with the Prednisone. Is that the only thing the doctors have

attributed to your bone problems? I know the side effects can be

pretty daunting, but I can't help but wonder if there was something

else that contributed to all of that. Did you take Calcium and Vit D

all those years? Did you have regular bone density tests? What kind of

preventative did your Rheumy have you on? Sorry for all of the

questions. I just like to think of all options......Doreen :)

Hi Dennis - Its wonderful that you've gotten your mobility back again

with the chair and have even added to it so your wife can enjoy it

with you. If I'm ever in East Texas, I'll watch out for the speed

Carol and group;

When someone mentions prednisone I have to speak on it. Five mgs

don't help enough for me to take any way. I am on Humira injections

every 2 weeks that helps so much. I love prednisone if it wasnt for

the humira I would take prednisone anyway cause the pain is so

horrific.

I am so glad you told everyone about your experience with

prednisone. Thats another reason this group is so great. WE can

learn of the side effects from each other. I am so sorry you had

that aweful brakes in your bones. I hope it gets better soon. God

bless and take care.

OH wow your in California. WHere its summer all year round. Do you

have earth quakes a lot ther. I would love to live in florida where

it is summer all year round. I live in S.C. . We have gentle

winters. It got to freezing last night thats unusual this early in

the season.
