Brad,

<< You want to use a bread knife to cut down that oak tree, go for

it.

I'd prefer to use a chainsaw.>>

That's the superior attitude I was talking about. My son and I are

cutting down the oak tree with a DIFFERENT chain saw.

No not at all superior. Tools. I was talking tools. The bread

knife may not get the job done in this century. Eventually. Maybe.

Lets get into the " my shoes are better than yours " because it will

be a nice change of topic. LOL

Tools. Fine. I assume in your analogy, the CI is the chainsaw. What

was the butter knife?

Only one comment (I'm doing better)

<<What else is there in the medical arena that can transform lifestyles

so radically?>>

Heart Transplants and bypass surgery, Infertility treatments, joint

replacements to restore mobility, corneal transplants, kidney

transplants, chemo and radiation therapy to cure cancer, AIDS and HIV

treatments that allow people with AIDS to be alive at all.

Would you approve of any of these for your son if he had a need?

Yes, since they are really aren't effective alternatives except for the

joint replacements. Nut with a CI, he dopes have an effective

alternative.

But even though all these are life altering treatments, I still wouldn't

classify any of them as miracles. Scientific achievements, yes.

Miracles, no.

In the deafblind community I know deafblind people who lost their hearing

and vision in childhood or adulthood , and they have chosen to continue to

use tactual sign language rather than get a CI because it is the lifestyle

they are used to. For me I lived in the oral world and I needed a CI to

continue to function in my environment. The deafblind community is such a

small group that people are accepting of one another, CI or not. The

National Federation of the Blind believes blindness is a physical trait like

hair color or height, are proud of their white cane and strongly believe in

independence. They may take a strong stance against future eye implants...

Brad,

The orher choice is a lesser quaility of life. But manageable to

some degree.

A matter of perspective I dare say. Beauty is in the eye of the

I dont recall how old your son is but, and just musing here, since

you say " ...he does have an effective alternative. " what he may think

of this in 10 or 20 years.

Cancer, AIDS, Heart Failure... Yes a REALLY low quality of life.

Agreed

He's 14. In 10 or 20 years, assuming he has recovered from the

non-hearing-related reason's he's not a CI candidate (doubtful, but

possible), then he can be like Joni and other pre-lingual folks and make

his own choice. Right now even with the 100% access to information he

gets in his ASL environment, he struggles like hell to make it through

each day for reasons not related at all to how much he hears or doesn't

hear. Rather, his struggles are directly related to events in his past

(pre-adoption) when hearing, speech and oral communication went hand in

hand with events that I hope no other human being ever as to endure or

hear about.

Yes he knows about the CI, as do all the kids at his school. There are

several kids there with CI's, but even before the first CI user

enrolled, the kids there are all very aware of the full spectrum of

communication and technology options are out there for them.

Amen!

CI or no CI a child (ANY child) doesn't have a chance of ever having

any sort of life at all if there not in a family that loves and supports

them.

Our adopted daughter was badly neglected when we adopted her at age 4.

Eight years later there's still signs of that neglect and I suspect

she'll carry some of it the rest of her life.

Hearing or deaf; signing or oral; implanted or non-implanted- Brad and

his family have given his son the most important thing: a loving family.

Bob,

1) Accusing someone of trolling is a serious charge.

2) You brought me directly into the conversation when you said,

" Hopefully our moderator sees through you [sic] motives. "

3) I wrote you privately about this yesterday, but did not receive a response.

So, you left me no choice. My silence could have been interpreted by

Brad to be agreement with you. And I don't believe Brad is trolling.

I don't want to " control " the group. I just want people to behave

respectfully toward one another and learn about their diseases and/or

conditions.
