Guest guest
I have had cortisone injections several times- multiple finger joints, wrist, toe joint and both hips and have always had good results. It seems to have jump started remission in those areas. I also have tried prednisone orally and that was a nightmare, because I had a terrible rebound psoriasis flair about 2 weeks after ending it. <Cortisone shots>

She said the only time they should be used is if they can be injected directly into the joint.
Guest guest
I saw my RA doc on Tuesday. He had told me he wanted me down to 5 mg of prednisone daily and that I could get cortisone shots if there was pain in the joints. So I showed up with both knees and shoulders in pain. He asked me to choose two sites and I chose both shoulders. About 2 pm the next day, I noticed my face was really red. It was a little hot in the house and my face does get red when my heart beats too fast. About 6 pm, I realized it was my whole face and neck and part of my torso. It's warm to the touch and every pore on my face shows -- like my face is swollen. I had to start doing the prep for my colonoscopy, so i didn't really do anything about it. I'll be in the hospital this morning for the procedure. It's a little redder this morning and I'm itching in some other places. I've never reacted to a cortisone shot before and I know there are other things in the injection as well as something that deadened the skin, etc. I thought about trying some benedryl, but I get nervous introducing new drugs along with the cocktail I'm already on. Has anyone reacted like this to an injection? Any input? dd **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos. I had a reaction once that happened in about 2 minutes. I dont know how fast any reaction suppose to be. Yours sounds serious. Let us know what happens. Guest guest
How about doing a step wise decrease in oral pred? You could ask your dr if you've got cortisone shots onboard, could you get away with a bigger decrease in pred. I'm not an MD, and I hear you on wanting to get lower/off of pred, but if I know one thing, I know that RA is sneaky, and if it senses that you've done something suddenly, it will pounce. Since I'm post partum, my dr is letting me drop a mg/month and I can already start to feel some problems in hands, feet, and knees. I'm glad you're feeling better though! Re: [ ] Cortisone Shots I've never had any side effects from cortisone shots but have had some with Prednisone. When the RA was really active, I would get shots in all my hand joints, knees, and other places at one time. But with the 'steroid' shots last week, I've had absolutely no pain! My normal was at least a 5 on the pain scale and higher most of the time. Now I'm going to do something stupid. While I still have some of the shots still in my system, I'm going to really drop my Prednisone intake or stop them all together. If it works for a while, I'll try to get another shot to boost my body while not taking Prednisone. How many of you think this idea is stupid? I thinnk I do, but if I never try, I'll never know. Guest guest
I have never had steroid shots for my RA, but I have decreased my Prednisone down to 5 mg about every 3 days. My rheumy put me on Sulfazine EC on the hope that I could discontinue the Prednisone altogether. When I saw him last, I was taking 5 mg every other day. I have since stretched that to every 3 days & I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. I might be better served by taking 2.5 mg every other day....I'm also playing my own doctor and that can be dangerous. Do I think it's stupid for you to stop taking it? No, but I think it's not advisable without discussing it with your doctor. A quick internet search turned up lots about gradually tapering off Prednisone. Let us know how you are. The doctor didn't really say anything about it. I talked to the nurse about it. She said she would call it a sensitivity and that I should report it to the doctor who gave me the injection -- just for the record. Of course, I have no idea what part of the injection I have become sensitive to. It has not gotten worse now. The colonoscopy went ok. The doctor was very thorough and took some biopsies to see if my Crohn's is coming back. Thanks for caring, dd **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Guest guest
Dennis,  Yes I have had reactions to the cortico- shots. I was quite worried and contacted my Pain Dr. They said it was called " Flushing " because I was also on Prednisone the added cortico- caused it and not to worry it would lessen until gone. It did. I just felt warm, flushed and I should mention...not tired at all.I really like that part of those injections, but my bones didn't appreciate all the good stuff steroids and cortico's leech out of your bones. As proven by the case of Avascular Necrosis I had. Since then I have had Total Hip Replacement Surgery. Now only if the flare-up is quite bad do I get an injection because my other hip is now susceptible to AVN. Use caution in taking the steroids.                  Gentle Hugs Cherblue > I saw my RA doc on Tuesday. Guest guest
I'm glad the colonoscopy is over. The worst part is the prep, isn't it? Did you have to drink a gallon of some liquid such as Go Lightly? If so, that might be a factor. Your rheumy should have an answer.
