DD,

The best advice I can give is to see a dermatologist. I started

having problems with my face, and found out I have cea. We have

all sorts of stuff, when we have an autoimmune disorder. Good luck,

and hope you can find out what's the cause, Tawny

[ ] Bumps on Chin

I asked this before. My chin keeps breaking out. It itches and gets bumps

all over it -- not a rash, but more like zits. Some of them get heads, some

don't.

I'm on Prednisone, MTX and ARava for RA and some other drugs for other

problems.

Does anyone else get this?

dd,

I haven't had a bad problem with it, but acne can be a side effect

of MTX.

Did they prescribe something to help the rosacea? There are a number of

really good prescription meds to help. Untreated, rosacea can become quite

unsightly (read ugly)...W.C. Fields is a famous person who had it - remember

his nose? I started having some skin issues that were diagnosed as rosacea

and when I started a prescribed med, it pretty much went away. I still have

some red patches, but it's so much better.

If it is not effectively treated, rosacea can cause rhinophyma (literally,

growth of the nose). With rhinophyma, the nose is bulbous, enlarged and red

and there may also be thick bumps on the lower half of the nose and nearby

on the cheeks. Rhinophyma occurs mainly in men.

I know that Prednisone can cause acne on your face and back so it may be the

culprit.

Here's a list of side effects from long term use. I have recently been

diagnosed with osteoporosis in my hip (2 points here); have a redistribution

of body fat (!!); use eye drops twice a day for glaucoma; and have several

other sides off and on.

Nearly everyone on systemic steroids for more than a month suffers from some

adverse effects. These may include any of the following problems, which are

not listed in any particular order of importance.

* Reduction of your own cortisol production. During and after steroid

treatment, the adrenal gland produces less of its own cortisol, resulting

from hypopituitary-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression. For up to

twelve months after the steroids are stopped, the lack of steroid response

to stress such as infection or trauma could result in severe illness.

* Osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) particularly in smokers,

postmenopausal women, the elderly, those who are underweight or immobile,

and patients with diabetes or lung problems. Osteoporosis may result in

fractures of the spine, ribs or hip joint with minimal trauma. These occur

after the first year in 10-20% of patients treated with more than 7.5mg

prednisone daily. It is estimated that up to 50% of patients using oral

corticosteroids will develop bone fractures.

* Reduction in growth in children, which may not catch up when the

steroids are discontinued (but it usually does).

* Muscle weakness, especially of the shoulder muscles and thighs.

* Rarely, avascular necrosis of the femoral head (destruction of the

hip joint).

* Precipitation or aggravation of diabetes mellitus (high blood

sugar).

* Increase in circulating blood fat (triglycerides).

* Redistribution of body fat: moon face, buffalo hump and truncal

obesity.

* Salt retention: leg swelling, raised blood pressure, weight increase

and heart failure.

* Shakiness and tremor.

* Eye disease, particularly glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure)

and posterior subcapsular cataracts.

* Psychological effects including insomnia, mood changes, increased

energy, excitement, delirium or depression.

* Headaches and raised intracranial pressure.

* Increased susceptibility to internal infections, especially when

high doses are prescribed (e.g. tuberculosis). Avoid oral live polio

vaccination. It is safe to have other routine immunisations.

* Peptic ulceration, especially common in those also taking

anti-inflammatory medications.

* There are also side effects from reducing the dose; these include

tiredness, headaches, muscle and joint aches and depression.

If you have been prescribed systemic steroids, make sure you understand how

to take the medicine safely. Regular monitoring during treatment may

include:

* Blood pressure

* Body weight

* Blood sugar

Discuss any side effects you may experience with your doctor.

Thanks Diane,

I was on Arava for about two weeks, and then got really bad intestinal pain

and diarrhea. So I quit for a few days and just started again about ten days

ago.

I've had a few zits around my nose and on my chin since I started all the RA

drugs, but this is worse and just keeps getting worse.

Derm appts are booking in November. I do have a call in to my PC. She

doesn't work on Wed.

It wouldn't be so bad, if they healed quickly, but they don't.

I was put on Metro Gel, and Rosula wash, but it didn't really work for

me. I have been trying to stomach antibiotics, but can't really

tolerate it. I'm now using Fineacea, it's fairly new. I do have a

lot of broken veins in a few areas, so if that don't clear up, I will

need to use lasar therapy. I have dry skin really bad, so I use

Cetaphil it's OTC, and it works well. You are right, sea can be

horrible. When I was first dx, I read all about it, and even cried

about the big ugly red nose. There is quite a few people with RA,

that have sea as well. I know people with RA do have problems

with their skin, just another thorn in our side. Take care, Tawny

Hi DD - I get that all the time. In my case its ingrown hairs - those

that don't get yanked out and sometimes that's the way they grow back

in. A menopausal thing in my case, I think........Doreen :)
