Guest guest
Hi Dawn, Welcome. I was diagnosed at 24 so I can completely understand your worries. I took the Depo shot, but not for the same reasons. I found it to be HORRIBLE! I bled forever, but everyone is different so I can't say how you'll do with it. I was pregnant at the time of diagnosis so it's harder still for me to say what helps with the bleeding. Silly me never went to the DR when I was bleeding like a sive! I ended up having surgery about 6 months after my Daughter was born and that resolved all my problems until now - 5 years later. Good Luck
Guest guest
Hi Dawn, Welcome to the group! I'm sorry I don't know how to stop the bleeding other than a low estrogen/high progesterone birth control pill (called Loestrin), which is working for me at the moment. Hopefully you already know to take lots of iron and get as much as you can in your diet as well. From what I understand, an iron supplement in the form of ferrous sulfate is the most absorbable. I got anemic from heavy bleeding so now I have a prescription for iron - - 324mg three times a day. I had to greatly increase my fiber intake too because that much iron will constipate you. Citrucel tastes/feel a lot better than Metamucil, if you need to go that route. Also, some things inhibit the absorbtion of iron -- such as black tea and calcium. I switched to green tea and take a calcium supplement a few hours before or after my iron pill. Hang in there, and hopefully the docs will find some way to get the bleeding under control while you decide what to do about your fibroids. Best wishes, Ellen > Hello All, I recently joined this group and I must say each of you have been an great help to me. Guest guest
Fran, I ended up in the ER the first time because I got so weak that I passed out. My hematacrit and blood pressure was very low and I was not stable. I would have a few good days and then start bleeding again, so I was VERY anemic. My hematacrit was 19 (its supposed to be at 40). My doctor kept a close watch on me and I had to have a blood count taken every few days that I was bleeding. Are you having your blood count checked? You really should to make sure you aren't getting too anemic--it can be dangerous. Is your 5cm fibroid a submucosal? Mine was the exact same size which made me a " good candidate " for UAE. Guest guest
Fran, I realized that I forgot to clarify in my earlier posts that I was actually hemorraging, not just bleeding. It sounds like you've got everything under control for now. But please be cautious and make sure you check in with your doctor regarding the supplements you are taking. And if you are hemorraging, definitely call your doctor. I don't want anyone to go through what I've been through...and in hindsight it could have been prevented if I had communicated more with my doctor in the early bleeding stages. Hope you feel better,

Guest guest
, I am curious as to why you ended up in the emergency room from bleeding. What caused you to go there? That is pretty darn serious and to have 2 blood transfusions! I am assuming that your hemoglobin was pretty low, but do you remember what it was? I have not had my H & H done but know that I am anemic from how I feel (completely drained, without energy by 6 pm and ready for the couch). Thanks for your input. Good luck with the embolization procedure.....I'm thinking of having that done after looking at my Ultrasound on Apr 4. My fibroid was very small (5 cm) in Aug, however, I'm thinking it may have grown or developed a new blood supply.....something! Thanks again. Fran Re: 26 years old... Help! Dear Dawn, Have you noticed an increase or decrease in bleeding after taking the bc pills? Hopefully you are on a pill with low estrogen because fibroids use estrogen to grow. I was having major bleeding from a 5cm submucosal. I tried bc, lupron, a D & C, and nothing stopped the bleeding. After ending up in the ER room 3 times in one month, and having 2 blood transfusions, I had a UAE about 1 month ago. Finally, the bleeding stopped and I am feeling better than I have in a long time. Its still very early for me to know whether this procedure will be successful in the long run but it possibly saved my life and bought me time to research other methods of treatment. I have started working with an acupuncturist/chinese herbalist who SWEARS she can control bleeding and shrink fibroids/endometriosis with Chinese herbs. In my research, I read about several studies where bleeding was controlled by Chinese herbs. Maybe this is a treatment option that would help you. It can be costly, and time consuming if you have to actually prepare the herbal teas at home (and the teas taste like dirt) but for me it will be worth it if it works. In the meantime, you should do all the research you can on UAE and myomectomy and doctors in your area who have successfully performed them so that you are prepared for all options if necessary. Here's a few websites that might be helpful in some of your research on alternative treatments: www.acupunture.com, www.qi-journal.com, www.aaom.org, www.healthy.net, www.herbalgram.org, www.naturopathic.org Hope this helps! Guest guest
Thanks..... No, I have not had it checked. I've been going by how I feel which is very indicative of anemia and I have been treating it with 20,000 mcg of B12 per day (under the tongue) and 800 mg of Folic Acid and a B complex twice a day. So you got so weak you passed out, yikes! Poor thing. I was bleeding for 20 days and finally got really fatigued. Last summer I bled for 3 wks out of every month for June, July and Aug. and it's been fine until Feb of this yr. I really appreciate your input. fran Re: 26 years old... Help! Guest guest
, Thanks. Were you flooding tampons and pads about every 2 hours or so? Fran Re: 26 years old... Help! Guest guest
Fran, Yes, I was part of the time. But I got to the point where pads and tampons were not practical anymore. I was going through a couple rolls of tp, and paper towels per day. Each time I ended up in the ER, I was using towels. I shudder just thinking about it...it was quite horrifying, not to mention embarrasing. If you are flooding a tampon/pad every couple hours, that's still quite heavy. Please make sure your doctor is helping you monitor the bleeding. --

Guest guest
Fran, the most common kind of anemia caused by heavy or continuous bleeding is iron deficiency anemia. It would be a good idea to have it checked out. The treatment would be iron supplements, but it should only be taken with your doctor's approval. Guest guest
Actually iron is quite toxic to us. I feel that B12 and Folic acid are the B vitamins necessary to build up our hemoglobin. I am a bit more natural in my orientation to most medicine. As a nurse, I have treated patients with the best of eastern medicine and allopathic medicine not always using expensive, synthetic and sometimes toxic chemicals. In anemia, it is the uptake of oxygen into our cells that gets compromised. Ferrous sulfate is not the answer far as I have seen. Our bodies have wonderful recuperative properties and can replenish our hemoglobin and red blood cell stores in a matter of days. Re: 26 years old...
