No sure on this list BUT I either own or mod several .

has an easy option to have ALL new members placed on moderation.

This helps to reduce SPAM. So that you can approve the new members

first few posts to make sure they are really interested in the list and

not just wanted to sell something.

I've not seen an approval requirement before on - I'm

curious why messages to this list require an approval? What kind of

messages get screened out? Inquiring minds want to know...

I've set NN to require approval for new members because spammers join

and post spam and the approval requirement prevents the spam from

actually hitting the list.

[Mike] I can vouch for this method! It's really the only way to go

with these . Even though it's a much smaller list (only

about 600 members), over on the Microbial Nutrition list I run (a

satellite group to NN about fermented foods) I routinely get spammers

who join and immediately start spamming, sometimes with five or more

messages at once! By moderating new members I can totally laugh at

their efforts and ignore them entirely. I've found it only takes

about five minutes once a week or so to change the settings for a

handful of new posters so they're no longer moderated. It's really not

much work and it's worth it! In the whole history of MN there's only

ever been two spam messages sent to the group. As soon as that first

one hit I changed the settings and the second was a weird fluke where

the spammer used a trick to beat the system: they uploaded a file and

had an automatic " new file uploaded " message sent to the group! That

can be easily blocked too. I see that NN has over 1600 members now,

which is huge (I remember when there was only about 500 and how amazed

I was too see it crack 1000), and a pretty high volume, so

definitely has a lot more work than me and I salute him! I do recall

in the past that NN didn't use that setting and got hit with spam

regularly.
