HUGE fan of Whedon's stuff. I've seen every episode of buffy, and consider it to

be one of the best shows ever on T.V. Intelligent, funny and exciting.

I didn't like the brief snippet of Firefly that I originally saw on TV, but saw

Serenity and loved it. I've now made my way through a couple of the Firefly

DVD's and, it's actually pretty damned good.

Forget the reruns, get the DVD's, gorram it! LOL!!

There are three episodes on DVD that never aired, nor do you have to

worry about seeing the show out of order, which is how Fox originally

aired it (??????). Below is a review I plucked from Amazon:

" Let me preface this by saying that I rarely watch television anymore.

The worst book ever published is a thousand times better than the best

tv show left on the air... With the possible exception of Joan of

Arcadia. Even that's not enough of a draw to keep me home on a Friday

night though. And reality tv... Pheh...

But Firefly...

There was a time when Friday nights were reserved for tv time. Picture

me, on the floor in front of the tv, begging my kids to play somewhere

else... Plleeeeeeaase! It's only on once a week! And then the theme

song begins... It's got a bit of a twang... fiddles... And then the

words, the spirit. You instantly know what the show's going to be

about. It's the American Dream. No... Not the new one about living

like Trump in a palace seemingly miles above Manhattan... The real

American Dream The one that brought our ancestors. It's about living

free, room to stretch out and breathe, self reliance, and self

determination. Would a simple television show dare to reach so far?

Firefly dared that and more, bringing the dream to the very stars.

Along for the ride are some of the most complex and original

characters ever seen in cookie-cutter-land. Then Fox, in true

ratings-dazed fashion, lassoed the dream and pulled it down.

If you've ever dreamed of open-spaces, open-minds, and a life lived

not without danger but without fear, you must own this collection. You

must. "

Indeed, to a guy who reminds me a greal deal of Mal--vice versa,

really--right down to the gun and the tight pants, except he's got a

beard more like Jayne's. In fact, he names his guns like Jayne does; we

have a shotgun named Zoe for obvious reasons and a little snub nose gun

named Wash (re-watch " War Stories " ). :) But I don't resemble Inara in

the least way, more's the pity.

Good? It's the best.show.EVER. ;) I have " converted " three members of

my knitting circle to the Browncoat Way; I joke that Joss Whedon pays

me in Fruity Oaty Bars to turn people into fans without their noticing.

It's bad enough that another NT-ish Browncoat friend and I are trying

to figure out a good NT-style recipe for Fruity Oaty Bars. And if you

have the Serenity DVD and haven't seen the easter egg of the Fruity

Oaty Bar commercial, let me know and I'll tell you how to find it.

nah - don't own the Serenity dvd - if only I had known about this...well, I'll

have to get it.

It's a great show - but, I'd have to say that Buffy was the best show ever :)

Wow! Every episode? I have put the boxed cd set on my birthday wish

list. I was really quite surprised at how good it was/is. And Whedon,

after Firefly was cancelled, added three of the actors to the Buffy

series.

I have not seen the original movie. Is it just as good if not better

than the tv series?

Yup, I agree. Pretty amazing stuff. I have never seen such character

development in a tv show.

Well then you got a good man, hold on to him.

That's funny. I have nicknamed mine Zoe and River. Zoe is the lead gun

(9mm) and River is the backup (.45) in case things get out of hand.

Morena Baccarin is quite stunning, but doesn't that come with the

territory, i.e. the role she plays?

LOL!

This is my (almost) complete birthday wish list:

A bottle of Laguvulin single malt scotch (16 year)

A box of Cuban Montecristos

Buffy the complete 7 year set

The Serenity DVD and the Firefly boxed set

Some good company

Might as well ask for the moon and maybe I might get a couple of those items.

Perhaps he added them to the Angel series, which was spun off from

Buffy.

Actually, it is nowhere near as good. If you watch the series, you'd

probably want to watch it as a curiousity.

I must say that I'm a big fan of some of the HBO stuff - Deadwood, The

Sopranos, etc. That is class stuff also..

Ahhhhhhhhh - that's my favorite of the single malt scotches in that

general price range. I'd probably choose a laphroaig (sp?) 15 year over

it though, but that's a bit pricier.

" A box of Cuban Montecristos

You might also want to check out the series 'Angel', which was spun off

from Buffy. Not quite as good consistently, but pretty damn good

nonetheless.

No, that's why Joss did the TV show. He was disappointed with how the

movie turned out. And of course as all right-thinking people know, Joss

is Boss.

I always tell friends who don't like science fiction, it's mostly

fiction and not much science; you have to see it.

Deadwood needs more spaceships.

No, seriously, Deadwood is fantastic. We're watching season 1 right

now, backfilling after seeing all of season 2.

To get to the easter egg: Go to the main menu on the DVD. Hit the LEFT

arrow on your remote. A doohickey on the RIGHT side of the menu will

light up. Hit " play " . Enjoy a short film of Joss talking about the

making of the Fruity Oaty Bar commercial, followed by the commercial

itself uninterrupted by River freaking out.

Oh yeah I seem to recall you are into scotches. The Laphroaig is

goooooood stuff, but it's already a HUGE leap for my family to

contemplate buying me some scotch, so a pricier scotch would pretty

much nix the deal. On the other hand, her dad drank scotch all the

time, and she is always telling me how much like him I am, so who

knows.

Ah yes, you are right, that isn't quite accurate what I said. This is

what I found: " After Fox canceled the series, Joss Whedon cast Adam

Baldwin, and on Angel: The Series and Fillion on

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. All three played villains. "

I haven't seen the Sopranos or Deadwood. That would require me to

actually schedule some tv viewing time, which normally just doesn't

sit well with me. Watching Buffy was a fluke, but I'm glad I came

across it. However the DVD thing is fabulous cuz I can control when I

watch something. I like the idea of TIVO as well.

I agree with you about the message of the film, and I went in with

high hopes, having enjoyed the TV show enough when it aired and being

a huge fan of " Angel " and a reasonable fan of " Buffy " , but I found

the execution disappointing. The story meandered without structure

and there was a lot of silliness undermining what could've been a

crackerjack story of corruption and abuse of power.

Still, Chiwetel Ejiofor rules. If you haven't seen " Dirty Pretty

Things " , I highly recommend it.

I'm similarly a fan of Charlize, but I didn't wind up seeing the

movie. I'll catch it on DVD for sure, but it just didn't look very

good. Did the story actually wind up working after all? One of my

problems, admittedly, was that it seemed to go in a very different

direction from the original animation, which had plenty of flaws but

also many compelling and fascinating aspects.

One problem with watching the TV show when it aired is that Fox

jumbled up the order of the episodes.

Right - but I thought the original discussion was about movement between

Firefly and Buffy...
