Public Works Minister in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh Kailash Vijayvargiya has taken up cudgels against Hindustan Latex Ltd's condom on behalf of the government. Vijayvargiya says the condom is a sex toy and will not be allowed to be sold in the state. The condom pack, which was launched by HLL six months back, comes with a vibrating ring. Meanwhile Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan also reacted to the issue and said anything doesn’t uphold the Indian culture will not be accepted. " I had said this earlier as well with reference to the sex education in the state. If there is something that is not acceptable in our culture we will take our own decision on this,” says Chief Minister Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chauhan. In March Chauhan had also banned sex education was in state schools amid protests against graphics and pictorial descriptions used in the course material provided under the adolescent education programme (AEP). http://www.ibnlive.com/news/india/06_2007/mp-vibrating-condom-creates-ripples-43\ 202.html _________________________ 2) VIBRATING CONDOMS IN THE PIPELINE With the growing HIV menace and population stabilisation far away, the government is contemplating theintroduction of “vibratingcondoms’’ to increase the acceptability of the devices which can provide dual protection from infection and unwanted pregnancies. The vibrating condoms - both for men and women - have been developed by an NRI based in Chennai. The government hopes to increase the acceptability of condoms with the introduction of the new variety. “Vibrating condoms will have a small, batteryoperated chip in them which will enhance pleasure and thus increase acceptability.’’ official sources said. The problem currently is that condoms are not much accepted in India. Condom usage forms only four-five per cent of all contraceptive methods in India while in the west it constitutes about 20 per cent, sources said. The government is also planning to conduct a study on the acceptability of vibratory condoms in cooperation with the scientist who has developed the variety. The aim is to make the new condoms available in the market and increase acceptability among commercial sex workers. Currently, vibrating condoms are being produced in Chennai and exported to the US and Europe; experts in the government are also planning to hold deliberations with family planning officials in China, a leader in the field on vibrating condoms. –TOI, 27th June, 2005 http://www.cgsiindia.org/Keemat%20November%202005.pdf _________________________ Regards, Dr. Avnish Jolly, #3008,Sector-20D, Chandigarh 160020, India.
