I don't have any data on it, but since a chicken's natural diet contains high amounts of omega-3 rich animal foods, it would surprise me if there was any selective pressure exerted on them throughout history to ensure efficient elongation and desaturation of the 18-C fatty acids. That's my guess in the absence of knowing. Guest guest
[Mike] Just a quick question for the experts: When chickens are fed flax to make eggs rich in omega-3, do they convert the 18 chain omega-3 to the longer chain omega-3s, or simply pass along the (relatively useless) 18 chains omega-3s unchanged into the egg? In the latter case, it would be a cheap fortification gimmick like with many commericial foods. Thanks! [Chris] I don't have any data on it, but since a chicken's natural diet contains high amounts of omega-3 rich animal foods, it would surprise me if there was any selective pressure exerted on them throughout history to ensure efficient elongation and desaturation of the 18-C fatty acids. That's my guess in the absence of knowing. [Mike] That's a great thought, thanks. Yeah, from what I've read, insects are a good source of the longer chain omega-3s. I haven't been able to find really solid data on that though (and I've acquired a pretty vast literature on the nutritional aspects of insects). I'm wondering if the omega-3s play a similar role in the chicken brain as in the brains of mammals like humans, cows, etc? Guest guest
I'd like to know more about that. Do you have a list of books? Which is best? Or web site?
