Guest guest
I haven't written for a long time but I have a question. I'm on a moderately low carb diet..but I don't eat much fruit at all. I have high blood pressure and I used to eat a banana each day and drink orange juice to keep my potassium level normal. Well, I can't eat these fruits anymore so does anyone know of a substitute or source of potassium other than taking pills. I take so many pills that I don't want to take anymore. Thanks, PatsyK
Guest guest
Just off the top of my head, spinach is very lowcarb and pretty high potassium. Also, a half kiwi is very high in potassium and not nearly as carby as bananas. Guest guest
What medication are you on for your high blood pressure that causes you to lose potassium? Theer are some that are potassium-sparing. Maybe you should discuss this with your Doctor. I take medication for my blood pressure that causes me to lose potassium also.. one of them is hypochlorothiazide, and the other is Hyzaar, which contains a small amount of hypochlorothiazide. I take the Hyzaar because it has some protection for the kidneys, and I have early kidney problems. Without the hypochlorothizide, I have so much swelling that I'm very glad to have it available. My doctor has tried so many different types of blood pressure medication on me, and this seems to be the best combination. I haven't had any problems with potassium loss since I started drinking the V8.... I like it, so it's a simple thing to do. Sandy

Guest guest
try using that 'fake' salt that has potassim cloride. i think Motons Lite is one. cheap way to get your potassium. rebecca -- " The best preparation for a better life next year is a full, complete, harmonious, joyous life this year. Guest guest
Hello patsyk@..., In reference to your comment: ð I saw that vegetable juice was listed in the information ð that Rick sent and I love V-8 juice..I'm going to the ð store tomorrow and buy allot. although V-8 is great for potassium, its also got a good chunk of carbs in it, so becareful and drink, and test and drink and test. Its base is tomatoe juice. And tomatoes have a lot of carbs.

Guest guest
Before you buy a lot you should buy just one can and check your BGs before and one and two hours afterwards. We're all different -- and juices tend to raise BGs a lot in some people. A lot of diabetics trying for good control find it better to avoid juices. Vickie, I found that to be true with orange juice but not with the low salt V8.... only 9 grams of carbs, but maybe that's just me.
