The most common form of supplemental HCl is betaine HCl. Most HCl supplements have pepsin added, which is necessary if you're taking calcium with meals. If you have some reason for taking calcium on an empty stomach, then go ahead and take a pepsin-free HCl, but you need enough D in your diet/system/supplements to absorb the calcium in either event, even if you produce or supplement with enough HCl. -

So it's not a problem as I take my Ca with meals. On the vit D do you mean you need it with the Ca supplement or just enough D in your system. I take all my CLO in the AM but split my Ca am and pm. Thank so much! Lynn
Guest guest
Hi, , Excuse my ignorance... but could you please tell me what " MCHC " is? And... " HCl " ? And... " betaine " ? Guest guest
Can anyone enlighten me as to why you take calcium supplements? CLO (Cod Liver Oil) is something I take every morning. But, what is the purpose of taking calcium supps? Also... what is the best CLO I can get, and from what web site? Thanks a mil, Dean > Not betaine, pepsin. I take all my CLO in the AM but split my Ca >am and pm. That's a good question. My guess is that the answer is that you just need enough D in your system, since the primary means of D acquisition we've evolved is exposure to sunlight. Also, adequate D actually causes intestinal cells to become capable of transporting calcium, so there's at least one mechanism by which D affects calcium absorption without being present for the absorption. OTOH, I have read on occasion that D is required to be present with calcium for proper absorption, but I don't recall any research citations, and it's not something I've actually looked into in depth myself. -
