I don't know about " tuning fork " . My own doc uses a monofiliment fiber,

touches it to different parts of my foot and asks if I can feel it. If I

can't feel it, it means neuropathy. However, so far so good. Vicki

he uses the tuning fork for? I can't think what else to call it but

think it is a tuning fork, it kind of hums and he touched the foot

with it, what does that tell him?

When my Dr uses the tuning fork she asks me if I can feel

the vibration at various points where she touches it.

With neuropathy, there is loss of sensation when the nerves

are damaged.

My old Dr used a piece of monofilament (fishing line) of a

specific diameter and poked around while asking if I could

feel that. Same reason as above, if you can't feel it the

nerves are damaged. You can get a piece of monofilament and

instructions from the US Government (free) to do this test

yourself, but I don't remember the details on how to send

for it right now. I have my wife do this test on my feet

occasionally, just for my own satisfaction. Its all part of

knowing how my body is doing.

, I have read that pycnogenol can reverse neuropathy. It's definitely

worth a try. If you want to read more about it you could do a Google

search...or you could join the LC-D list which has archives you could access

with lots of posts on this subject. If you want the join-up info for that

list let me know...I don't have time to look it up right now, I'm on work

break. But I can do it later. Vicki

asks:

> is there some kind of treatment for neuropathy.

Many people experience significant recovery from neuropathy by keeping their

blood sugars at real non-diabetic levels (not what is considered excellent

control for diabetics) and by using supplements such as Alpha Lipoic Acid.

For a lot of information on helpful supplements go to:

http://www.geocities.com/bsy53/dn/neuropat.html

Keeping one's HbA1c closer to 5% than to 6% is more important if damage is

showing itself as it is in your case.

I've never needed this test, but I understand that a fairly common approach

is to touch your feet, etc. with a piece of monofilament line to see if you

can feel it. Some have also reported use of a tuning fork to see if you can

feel the vibration. In any case, it's not a test you need to be afraid of.

, neuropathy has been reversed by having blood sugar in good control, an

A1c well under 6.0 for instance. There are many stories in the shared files

under " success stories " of neuropathy either improving or disappearing. The

URL for the shared files is at the bottom of each message.

Also pycnogenol and Alpha lipoic acid have been found to be beneficial for

reversing neuropathy, and ALA has shown to prevent it as well. Check out

this herbal encyclopedia for further information.

If that is the test he does on you it will depend how sensitive to eletricial

stimulation you are. I had shock therapy when I was a kid so I am extremely

sensitive. That also made it impossible to get acurate results for me. My endo

says I have good ciruclation in my feet and legs but that doesn't discount the

pain from the neuropathy neither does it help explain it so they won't give me

anything for it so I take Aleve by the handful.

Good Luck hopefully you will have better results

Carolyn, have you tried Alpha Lipoic Acid www.iherb.com or MSM www.msm.com

or Evening Primrose Oil? Sometimes these things really help people, and

aren't as hard on your stomach as nsaid's (like Aleve).
