Would there be any potential side-effects with the NAC? Some people can develop gastric distress at high doses, but the main issue I'm aware of is maintaining balance in your antioxidant network, because upregulating one component of the network without compensatory upregulation of the others can actually lead to increased production of certain kinds of free radicals. Boosting SOD (superoxide dismutase) creates more peroxide, requiring more glutathione peroxidase or catalase to prevent the formation of extra hydroxyl radicals. The big three are generally considered to be SOD, GPx and CAT, but I've come to the conclusion that methionine reductase (MET) is equally important. Dietary SOD, GPx and CAT pretty much aren't absorbed at all, though plenty of misguided or dishonest vendors try to convince people otherwise, but NAC boosts GPx, bacopa primarily boosts SOD, and curcumin boosts all three, so if you take large doses of NAC, I'd recommend taking at least curcumin and possibly also bacopa. Curcumin and bacopa have a legion of benefits, so there's little reason not to take them too. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to look into MET. While I expect it's absorbed no better than the others, I could be wrong, and I don't know what can be used to upregulate endogenous production either. -
