> Any ideas on what causes high triglycerides in humans and how to

lower them?

Suze,

I believe Atkins said fish oil lowers the triglycerides. And I

believe that adding CLO was one of the reasons mine lowered

dramatically.

Here are my triglyceride #s:

8/94 -- SAD diet and stress -- 142

11/96 -- SAD diet and extreme stress -- 190

7/02 -- after 2 years strict macrobiotic (i was eating a fair amount

of wild salmon) -- 91

2/04 -- after 1.5 yrs on NT and adding CLO -- 26 !!!

7/04 -- 5 mos later; shouldn't have been much change in diet -- 52

According to the lab report, triglycerides should be under 150.

Clearly diet made a difference in my case.

I'm lower carb now than I was in 2004, but haven't had my blood

checked recently. However in 2004, I was eating close to no sugar

and zero processed or refined foods.

On another topic -- I thought of you and the conversation you had

w/your mother about braces when I read the following in the

Washington Post a month or so ago.

" Kids in Thailand want braces -- even if they don't need them! Girls

are getting *fake braces* with rubber bands in colors to match their

ourfits or moods. But health officials say the fake braces could

cause gum disease. "

So, the kids in Thailand could say, " Mom, if only you'd eaten poorly,

I could have had real braces! "

> This document recommends a low fat diet and fish oil and niacin.

Suze,

Just a few more points. Macro isn't a low fat diet as some assume --

olive and sesame oils are used liberally. And, like I said, I ate

salmon a 2-4 times every week. What I did get rid of on macro was

*all* sugar and all refined foods.

And, of course, when I went NT I added a lot of ghee & animal protein.

I stayed off sugar. I kept the whole grains, but cut back on them.

So in my case, neither of my dramatic drops in triglyceride levels

occured on a low fat diet. (not surprising is it?)

One final point, Suze! (or so I think!)

I noted that I was under stress and then extreme stress during the 1994

and 1996 tests. But my life was still very stressful in 2002 and

2004. It's just that the stress was at its peak from 96-98 which is

when my triglycerides were highest and so I thought it worth noting.

I guess that's the way a poor man ices his grill.
