Last I heard they were *charging* $250 an ounce on average, but that

probably isn't what the donors get. I've only heard of voluntary

contributions and not remunerated efforts.

Astonishing, isn't it? This was a subject of much indignant discussion

on a lactating mom's list several years back. Your reaction was typical

of the moms and there was no small heat about it, especially based on

the understanding that the milk was donated. This has been several

years, though, and things may have changed since then.

Hi, please remember that there are large costs involved in processing the milk:

tons of paper work, lab work on the donor that the milk bank pays for (I think),

employees, storage facilities, etc

And don't forget supply and demand. I doubt women are clammering to donate

their breast milk if they arn't spending the trouble feeding it to their

baby...

Lana,

I've been doing a little research on procuring breast milk and it

seems there are a number of philanthropic lactaters with an

overabundant supply out there willing to donate milk for preemies and

cancer patients--though the screening process may put some off.

But there aren't many banks in this country and I imagine a donor

needs to live in proximity to a bank.

I imagine some women may also appreciate that their donated milk is

going through official channels to someone with a medical prescription

for it and not potentially going for fetish use.

Here's a whole riotous thread of informal internet breast milk sales,

including hard-luck teen mom vendors running out of freezer space and

freaky men buyers and all sorts of well-meaning folks in between (just

a warning that if any of the above is upsetting, don't bother with it,

as if anybody wants to bother with it at all)

Prices are $1-2/oz., plus shipping.
