I live in the LA area and am looking for a great sources of Bison, Elk, Beef, Lamb- there seems to be so many sources on the interent- but I would prefer to hear personal recommendations. Also I would like to hear what vendors you've tried and didn't like. I figure buying a quarter or so of an animal from a source that's good is better then piece mealing it costwise in the ling run. Plus I'd love to do it before winter hits and god knows where they'll get their feed from right? I can't wait to make jerky's out of Bison and elk. Thank you, I have just tried Buffalo Gal........http://www.buffalogal.com/specials.asp also is on ebay:).....great meat!!! Beth
Guest guest
You can always find them on the internet and then drive out there and buy a portion to take home and cook, then go back if you liked it. That way you can also see the animals and how they're kept before you commit. If they're out on pasture and it's not grazed to the ground except for some weeds they won't eat, then it's probably pretty good. You won't believe the farms I've seen that advertise " Pastured " but the animals are on bare dirt, or practically bare dirt with just some inedible weeds. If you're buying sausage and processed meats as well, ask if they'll use sea salt, much better for you, and if they add nitrates/nitrites, see if they can add in some ascorbic acid powder to prevent them from forming nitrosamines. If you add 1 part baking soda to 2 parts ascorbic acid powder (available in most health food stores) it has almost no taste at all, the baking soda buffers the acid, which is sour on it's own. > > Hello! > > I live in the LA area and am looking for a great sources of Bison, Elk, > Beef, Lamb- there seems to be so many sources on the interent- but I > would prefer to hear personal recommendations. Beef and pork is Rocky Canyon Farms, but I'll have to get back to you with the number. Also at local LA farmers markets. No lamb nor elk that I'm aware of other than eatwild.com B. Guest guest
Questions for anyone in SoCal:I was born and raised there, and left San Diego for Organic 100% GrassFed farming in the Midwest (WI). My sister recently asked why I didn't return to CA since the market was so much better there. I replied " because of the " GRASS " in grassfed, there is no grass (discounting highly irrigated lawns, or over fertilized & irrigated desert alfalfa) there " . So please tell me where are farmers raising animals on organic grass or obtaining organic hay year-round?? Have I made a big mistake? (Land is cheaper, but property taxes are close to triple what they are out there) Would it actually be possible to move back? In my half-century, I have seen natural vegetation grow enough in S.CA to feed cattle with out grain supplementation only from Jan to about May. I know we had a 10 year drought before I left, but did the weather change that much?? What happened to Xeriscaping, drip irrigation and everything we poured our weekends into for drought resistant yards? Maybe the constant rain out here has turned my memories to mush! Here is what I do now: www.blackberryridgellc.com I fly meat out to a group in San Diego every time I visit my family. Is there really people doing this there? Thanks, Jan
Guest guest
I live in Florida and even though we have lots of grass it is not very good grass. I have ordered good bison from Northstar bison over the internet and it is very good. They also have specials where they don't charge for shipping. Allyn PRIORITY INVESTMENTS N' KOLLATERAL,INC. Jan, Their aren't people doing what you're doing, no; none of the meats I named are organic. The Lindners are in So. CA but they've moved their bison herd to No. CA. They drive up to see/feed them every few weeks. Here're some picsnad sketchy details: http://lindnerbison.com/aboutus.html Re: Rocky Canyon Farms, they are *very* small producers. I haven't seen their operation--maybe they're awful? I doubt it but I'll interrogate them this week, using your guidelines: http://www.blackberryridgellc.com/index_files/Page2061.htm I looked at your site, what beautiful photos! What a noble message! When are you coming to San Diego? B.
