Hi, My name is and I just joined this group. I recently had a

total thyroidectomy based on a diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer.

I'll be undergoing RAI in Feb. Is there anyone who was diagnosed with

thyca while pregnant. Does anyone have experience taking birth control

pill and thyroid medication. Can you take a birth control pill that

contains estrogen?

Thanks.

For all practical purposes there are no major problems taking thyroid

hormones

and estrogens at the same time.

You just have to tell your doctor about it and if you stop taking the

estrogens

you should let the doctor know as well.

Estrogens may increase the dose of thyroid needed a little bit

and they also change the blood tests for T4, T3 and T3 Uptake.

Hi .

I can only help you out with the first part of your question. I had

a baby in November of 2000. I was diagnosed with Pap thyca in March

of 2001. Since Thyca is such a slow growing cancer, I am convinced

that I had cancer while I was pregnant. I did have some

complications while I was carrying. I developed pre-eclampsia and

put on bedrest for the last month of my pregnancy. I ended up

delivering 3 1/2 weeks early but my baby was perfectly healthy. She

was 4lbs. 13oz. Very small but very healthy and today (at one year

of age) she's perfect. The dr's say what happened with me during my

pregnancy was not because of the cancer. I'm not so sure and I

probably will never know.

I wish I could help you out with the other part of your question, but

I'm sure someone on the board will answer. This group has been so

helpful for me and I know that there are several out there who have

had no problems with pregnancy after thyca.

Good luck

Yes you can take estrogen containing birth control pills with thyroid

replacement. However, you *may* require more thyroid hormone then you would

when not taking birth control pills. For 6 years, I took thyroid medication

with birth control pills. I was nicely, evenly regulated on .137 of Levothroid.

Earlier this year, I began taking birth control pills and my TSH quickly dropped

to the hypothyroid range and I had a devil of a time getting it back down. In

fact, I couldn't get it back down without going through a lot of med changes and

tests, so I gave up the birth control pills. Since you are just starting out,

you should be able to start off and get it down from the start and maybe your

body will react a lot better than mine did. But overall, it is no big deal to

take both.

Hi, I had the same thing happen to me. I started

taking hormone replacement therapy and I started to

gain weight and couldn't wait to get home from work

and go to bed. I was exhausted. I had my TSH checked

and was very hypo 8.0, which as you know is a big

problem. I never got a real yes or no answer from the

endo., pharmacy, or GYN if the hormone therapy had

altered my synthroid. But I went hypo on it, so I told

my GYN and went off the drug 2 1/2 months ago. I had

to increase my synthyroid to 150 (highest I've taken)

and my TSH is down to .22.

Debbie -

I assume you are aware that .22 is still higher than the suppression level of

less than .10 generally recommended for thyroid cancer patients?

There are exceptions to this, of course, but it may be something to discuss with

your endo.
